Question Need help in choosing dedicated server

I need help in choosing a dedicated server, either in Europe or in US (with good speed to Europe). I will be hosting 5 websites on the server. 3 forums with around 5000 pageviews a day each and 2 other websites with php and mysql db with around 15000 pageviews a day each.

What kind of server do I need? Mainly visitors from Europe and some from the US. What type of offer/company can you recommend to me?

What kind of budget are you working with, if any?

Don't really have a budget worked out yet. But hopefully less than $160 or 80. But would be excellent with cheaper than that as well

Well with room to grow you should be fine on a lower end Xeon or a higher end P4.

What is your bandwidth usage? And are you looking for a control panel of some sort?

bandwith usage is less than 1000GB a month at the moment. Would like a control panel yes. Cpanel, plesk or directadmin would work fine. A managed solution would be a plus.

I would say with a control panel 1-2GB should suffice. 2GB will again, give you room to grow.

Are the sites running now? If so, what kind of resources are they using?

I would be looking for a package somewhere with:

    Intel Dual Xeon 2.4GHZ
    2GB of RAM
    2000GB Transfer
    160-250GB Hard Drive

This would allow you room to grow since you might only need 1GB of RAM now but in time you will need more, the same with your bandwidth you might use 1000GB but in time it will surpass this. You would be looking at somewhere around $110 - $150 USD/month or you could go for something with the same specs but a Intel Pentium 4 Dual Core 3.0GHZ for $85-$110 USD/Month .

Probably you can look at softlayer packages.

Take a look at echoservers.com, they got a quad core intel for a fairly good price. I know they have clients with dedicated servers that host huge forums that probably have 600-1400 users online at any given time.

So they know a thing or two about high volume sites/servers.

It seems most of your users are from Europe. It absolutely makes no sense to get a server in US.

There are a few hosts that come to mind.

    www.eurovps.com
    www.rapidswitch.com
    www.uk2.net/wht
    www.rackedge.com

There are quite a few more, so dont be afraid to search .

I know that for 80 or so, you will be able to get a Core2Duo system with at least 1Gb RAM and DirectAdmin - take a look at the offers forum.

But is a Core2Duo system with 1 GB RAM enough to run my websites?

at a push, possibly. If you wanted a guaranteed performer, i'd probably increase your budget a little, give it 2gb ram and go for a core2quad.

What are the sites currently running on? Whats the current load?

Ah, in that case - unless your current host can tell you the kind of load you're using then its going to be guesswork (pretty much), but the above spec should be okay.

This could be just my opinion, but since you are just hosting websites, a US host should be fine.

For example WHT.com loads just fine when browsing as an european, while the server isn't really close to me. Hosts that are based in for example New York and maybe even Dallas should do the job for you.

You will not only have a lot of more company options, but also a lower price.

So, e.g. it should not matter if I have the websites hosted in US or Europe if there are no big files etc. ?

with that many visitors I would say 6 on the conservative side and a bare minimum of 4, make sure your setup is capable of going upto at least 8GB, a single quad core xeon might be able to handle it pretty well, but again airing on the side of caution I would go with a lower end dual quad core, say a 1.6 or a 1.8.

    So this kind of server:
Dual Xeon 3.06 Ghz (DUAL CPU)
    2GB DDR2 RAM
    250GB SATA

    Would not manage the websites?

and thw dual quad xeon is actually 8 cores so at best if the cpu's are dual core in the system you just listed then you have 4 cores, still less than 8 and they are built on a better architecture than the previous cpu's.
