    Searchme.com - The Google Killer?

SearchMe.com - I saw this site posted somewhere and thought it was pretty interesting.

It's a 'visual search engine' - watch the video and you'll know what I mean.

Very cool concept if done properly, I can imagine it must be pretty resource intensive though.

Basically you search for a term and you can browse through the results, but you are able to see what's on the homepage before you click through to the website.

Also, it will give you categories to choose from, example from their video: If you search for diamond back, before bringing you to the results you can choose from a category, such as: Rattlesnake/insects, bicycles, racing, etc.

I would think more highly of it if it didnt look like I was flipping through pages on an iPhone.

I'd be interested to see if its actually an interactive web page that you are viewing or simply a screenshot of the page.

Something like a CoolIris type of thing, but within a webpage/search engine. That way you could actually select text and scroll up and down and stuff.

There will be issues for international users where internet connection is not good.
Loading screenshot image may take few seconds to a minute, and people will go away.

I think sites like this will get a certain amount of interest. I know that ask.com has been advertising a lot recently and seems to have some reasonably cool features - i'm just too google loyal...would like to try this site for real though!

Must be Flash-based. While nice eye candy, I don't see its mass appeal.

Not a bad idea. I like being able to flick through a bunch of sites, without having to visit them.

It's selling point is the UI and it is a matter of time for others, including Google, to copy it if there is demand for it.

But what others will find it hard to copy is the data-mining algorithm. Users want accurate results and that's the most important thing.

lol, that Algorithm can't be all that great. Most things I search on ANY forum let alone Google return nothing but Adsense spam article websites now.

Yep, this is how Google rose to dominance. Nothing flash, but just good search results.

The image slideshow is a good idea. However, I like the categorize ideas way better.

For example, If I want to search for "match" ratio, I can select so instead of having to go through all sites with the word ratio.

I can see google going that way too (categorizing search results).

I tried to register and still haven't received an invitation.

    Peace,

Using the beta, pretty interesting. Great idea, just depends on what you are searching for.

They might even be a little ahead of Google here, in the evolution of how we use search on the internet, although obviously their search results are currently nowhere near the quality of Google's.

Google's search is textually based, and that is fine, for now, whereas this new service is visual based results. I wouldn't be surprised if Google evolved their search into something more visual in the coming years. It's not going to stay text based results forever.

I put my email in their last night and received the beta invite today, after playing around with it for about 30 minutes all I have to say is WOW.

I expected the results to take time to load all the images, but it is VERY quick. Everything loads for me in 1-2 seconds, though for those with dial-up or slower connections you might run into some problems, right?...wrong. There's also a toggle display(pictures attached) which you can show both text and images, and as you scroll through with the scroll bar the text goes along with it.

They need the spiders to crawl more frequently, it does seem to show relevant results and I like the categories feature, but the images seem to be outdated. When searching for "elief.com" it shows the page we had up 2-3 months ago.

Another thing that I don't like is you can't open multiple websites in tabs with firefox. You have to go back to the search engine if you want to go to another website, rather then opening several at once.

My rating: 7/10 - If they improve how many spiders they have crawling, come up with a better searching algorithim, and allow you to open multiple websites I would give it a 9/10.(Google, to me, is 8/10)

eye candy for sure but it will last a very short time...when the novelty factor wears off.

what serious person is going to change from using google or even yahoo or msn for that matter? I'd say not many at all.

    maybe they'll improve it drastically.

Yeah, but Seachme has ways to go to develop their search engine to rival Google. In my experience, Google still has better search results.
