Is there a free(or fairly cheap) statistics service, like Google Analytics that shows you in real time viewers who came to your site, etc.? Google currently updates once every several hours.

There really is no such thing as "real time" statistics in the real world, though I suppose you could generate statistics on your own every 15-30 seconds using a tool like awstats. You would just have to verify that it's not killing your server(s) and internal network connectivity to do it.
Sites that generate huge amounts of traffic probably have servers that parse log files and distribute that load off the actual web servers. The log file data is probably stored via NFS or some shared SAN storage array. In any case, it tends to be very compute and disk intensive to parse big log files.

Check out Clicky ( www.getclicky.com). We've been experimenting with it for the past few weeks, and have been pretty impressed with the results so far. It's not quite realtime, but much closer than Google Analytics. Personally, I prefer the UI to Googles, although I think it's missing some of the more advanced data mining functionality.

Sure, check out CNStats.com
It has a "Trace Browsing" options to view real time traffic data. I just checked the STD demo as i own the PRO version and it does real time also but it appears they have the actual display of data disabled in the demo due to privacy reasons as it shows their IP, Useragent, URL they are on, Referring URL etc.
But if you go to the overview here: http://www.cnstats.com/en/about/feature-tour.php
Scroll to the second last screenshot and it shows the real time data. Download it and give it a try, it might suit what you want.
