Server Crash on Weekly Basis 1and1
Hello,
I have a lynix root server with 1and1.com and recently the server has been going down I have no access to FTP/the sites or root. Their support tells me to look in var/log but im not sure what file to look in or what im looking for as far as to why the server would crash.
So far my solution has been to re boot the server and it has been working but i need to find the cause of this...any suggestions on where to look or what to look for?
Thank you,
Erik

You would need to look at /var/log/messages. That is the system log file.
What you would look for is what happened around the time the system went unresponsive. The easiest way to find this would be to look for when the system started booting and see what is happening right before that.
If you don't know what the beginning of the boot looks like, use 'dmesg' on the shell, and that'll show you what it looks like. You may also look for a bunch (about 100) lines that have just about the same timestamp.

You probably have unmanaged service and sounds like you are not very technically inclined. I would suggest upgrading to managed service and have your provider take a look at it or hire someone to take care of things for you.

Any luck with getting it fixed yet?
My sever just went down again last night
And I have checked every log and no errors and the response from 1and1 is that they want to test the hardware, not sure i believe it is a hardware problem
Here were my last errors before it when down: if anyone can help thank you

Interesting. Something on your server is sending a DHCP address request (thereby replacing the static IP). Can you log back in and see if there are log lines after the DHCPREQUEST one?
If you are on a dedicated static IP plan, just rename the dhclient binary (mv /sbin/dhclient /sbin/dhclient.orig). This should keep the server from requesting a DHCP address and become unresponsive on the dedicated one.

Well I have a managed server and they did a hardware update on 03-19-2008 to all root & managed servers,
See Below:
Following the platform upgrade, newer versions of supported scripting and programming languages will be made available – Perl, Python and Ruby. Your old scripts will continue to run properly as they are downward and upward compatible. However, you will be able to use the new functionalities available in the latest versions of the programming and scripting languages. Click on the scripting languages for more information about the new functionalities.
Perl Version 5.8.8
Python Version 2.4.4
Python Version 2.5
Ruby Version 1.8.5
since that time the servers have been dropping like flies for hours at a time. When I get to someone in Dedicated support they re-boot the server or apache and its back up, as soon as it tries to do any scheduled tasks the resources overload and its down again.
I've been on top of it but now its Sunday "EASTER" and NOBODY is manning the server line, level one customer service is a PHUCKING JOKE, they have no access to anything and they can't help.
I received an email telling me they have a fix in place for a and I quote We will need to briefly shut down your server while technicians
perform an internal hardware realignment.
This realignment will be performed overnight on April 3, 2008,
between 12:00 AM EST and 06:00 AM EST. Your server will not be
accessible during this time.
APRIL 3RD are they kidding? As soon as I can get access to via FTP, i'm donig a full back up and changing hosts!
This is bad for business.. 3 years no problems, did they never hear if it aint broke don't mess with it?

To be honest I am surprised you guys have gone with 1 and 1 for your vps's. A quick search of the forum bring up many angry posts about poor customer service from the company.
emacin:
As far as your issue goes, if the last log message was about a dhcp request, do you actually have a dhcp server installed and running correctly? About the only reason why you would need a dhcp server running is if you plan on using the server as a dialup gateway, which I am pretty sure you don't.
If you don't mean to use the dhcp server, I would recommend turning that service off.

I have no idea what this question means...
I've pretty much had it they re-booted my sever but I have a bout 2gigs to download to move as well as a very large phpbb forum. it will take some time.....
PS: I have read and read this. Price is not really an issue but do not want to get raped either. For a Managed Server who in your opinion warrants a go?

Just an update again they are talking greek to me...
The crash is becaused by something called UDEV.... their software upgrade on older root servers and managed servers are causing UDEV to crash apache...
I am probably stating this incorrectly but they claim to be working on a fix

Same problem here
Site will drop anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours. Completely disgusted with 1and1 tech support.
Once ftp is re-established, time to back-up all data....access tables for a back-up and move to a new hosting company.
Anyone use Lunarpages? They don't look bad.
Spoke with tech support 15 minutes ago and server is down AGAIN. They claim I will receive an email telling me what happened. I guess the level 1 tech doesn't have that in their script.
I have used 1and1 for years without a hiccup. I am shocked with this apathy towards their customers. Three emails to complaints@1and1.com have gone unanswered.

Seems the 3 year old servers took a powder mine too, I got a dedicated server guy pretty sharp helping me out moving to a big server.

I've had it I'm moving too!!! They now have the worst service. nothing gets done unless you keep calling. Everything described here is exactly what I'm experiencing. It's been like this for a month. 99.99% uptime what a joke. I'm really annoyed with their service.

As much problems I had with 1and1 I have to give credit where credit is due... Do to the size of my database and the absolute disaster it was trying to get a new host to help (WHICH THEY WOULD NOT).... 1and1 was able to upgrade me to a brand new server about 10x more than I'll ever need...
They also Server support which is different from Level 1 not only knowledgabe, but they also assisted moving all my data for me in one swoop. They zipped it up moved it over uncompressed it and all 9 of my sites with 100% of the data was exactly set up the way it was on the old server. My web guys hooked up the databases and we hardly missed a beat.
Now running 8 days with absolutely no issues lightning fast knock on wood no issues. Yes I understand giving these another try but to be honest the level of support when I questioned about 1/2 a dozen other hosts was horrible as well.
SO KNOCK ON WOOD although I'm paying 3 times the amount the move was something I was planning on in the next 6 months anyway and my hand was forced. As stated YMMV, but they fixed the problem and assisted with the move so I have to give kudos where they are due.

Move?
Where did you guys move to? Im looking for a host, Ive been dealing with my dedicated server crashing on a weekly basis and have tried every method of troubleshooting...
I had Valueweb for 5 years never had a problem and nothing but problems from one and one...i left Valueweb because they wanted 50.00 to reset my root password. I figured after 5 years my first service request could have been free....
