Host for < $20/month for forum

I run a very small forum (max 5 users on at a time/1000 posts total) that is currently hosted on dreamhost. However, over the past few months, dreamhost has been getting slower and slower, now taking ~1 minute to load the front page of my site (basic SMF installation) and I think it is time to move to a new host. My requirements are not high though I do plan to host other, personal sites on it so multiple addon domains are a must. Performance is my main concern. I have been looking at medialayer, downtownhost, and am thinking of possibly getting the cheapest dedicated server from corenetworks. Does anyone have any more recommendations/reviews of these hosts?

I'd personally recommend HostGator... I host two forums with them and they've been extremely good.

Any hosting provider can offer what you need for far less than $20/mo. You have thousands of choices that will work fine.

Dedicated seems like overkill for what you currently need. There's plenty of shared hosts, better than Dreamhost, that can handle your requirements for well under $20/month. Including the ones on your list, and others.
~ But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong...

my advice is not to go with overselling web hosts, and to get decent VPS.

    Not needed.

Go with any regular host that doesn't oversell and you should be fine.

VPS or dedicated server at this point is overkill.

With a max of 5 users online you definitely don't need to be thinking about a dedicated server or even a VPS yet. Since forums are heavily database driven and your willing to pay up to $20/month, I'd go with a performance based host rather then a host with an overselling model such as DreamHost or HostGator.

Check out the hosting offers section - the shared hosting offers section to be specific. There are literally thousands of companies that will do what you need for well under $20 a month.

Yet with merely 5 users online, this is exactly the type of site that budget hosting aims to be serving fine. From what I've noticed, for some reason, budget hosts using clustered hosting solutions have a bad habit of overcrowding their MySQL servers, which I suspect the root of the OP's issues. Research should be able to uncover any performance related issues with a host though.

I do agree that dedicated and VPS are an unnecessary, expensive complication (especially once server management is put into the equation). $10 shared hosting should be able to serve the OP just fine.

That is exactly what I was trying to get at. If he was just serving a few pages on a simple website the over sellers would be fine as long as it's one of the bigger names. Since it's mainly for a forum though, usually from my experience the big oversellers either have extremely slow SQL servers being so overcrowded, or some type of error with even connecting to them half the time.

There is no need to get a dedicated server. That forum is very small. Dreamhost is a huge overseller thats why they are slow. You are better off choosing a smaller host that doesn't oversell much.

Thanks for the advice. The reason I was actually considering a dedicated server is actually the same reason you said it would be a worse choice, that is, it would be nice to have complete control over my hosting (I know how to manage a server). As much as I would like to use a budget host, I would rather have the stability and peace of mind that a slightly more upscale host (should) offer.

with 5 user constant online vps is not needed for sure. out of the list you had I would suggest downtownhost, although I've only been with them for one month you can see tones of other good review from them.

Perhaps a semi-dedicated might interest you. All the benefits of shared hosting, with less crowded servers depending on how much you pay the company. Most semi-dedicated plans only host between 10-30 customers in total instead of 150-300 on regular shared hosting plan.

That will give your forums the performance boost. With your needs, I don't think you need to be a dedicated server or even a semi-dedicated a hreliable provider who offers quality over quantity would be fine

I dont think you'll have to get a dedicated server for the forum with 5 users online. You can get a decent host with good prices(less than 20$). You can check shared hosting forum, There are lot of good offers.

Good Luck with your new host

I recommend Medialayer, you will be impressed.

Megadeal your only allowed to promote yourself in the offers forums, not here.

Lots of hosting provider can offer you the cheapest plan. My suggestion is that 'If you need the best apple at cheapest price. Then you should test before purchasing the apple'. My mean is that you should test on demo account and then you should pay them.

    Thank you,

Find a webhosting company, Google "Webhosting name + coupon" a coupon and most likely it will be in your budget range
