How Did You Get To WebHostingTalk? [merged]

For a lot of us, the name's easy enough for a direct type-in... "webhostingtalk.com." For others, like myself, we've shortened the site with some quick bookmarks. Some people find this place on Google, others from a friend. No matter how we got here or how we continue to get here, we're still here.

So I ask you, pull out that old memory. What first brought you to WHT and how long have you been reading these forums?

I think I was searching on Google for reviews on A Small Orange and WHT was one of the first results.

I've been here since early 2001 - back when it was using vBulletin v1.1.16.

A friend of mine that owned a web hosting company (at the time), told me about the forums. I've been a member since.

I was searching for some technical help on Linux when I stumbled upon WHT and had been here since. Great and serious forum for the hosting industry.

I was looking for a hosting provider and almost every review was on WHT so I decided to register so I can ask a few more questions.

Oh man I really don't remember. I think I was first starting to learn about the web hosting industry and how it all worked. I was most likely looking for a host and got bit by the hosting bug. I wanted to learn all there was about the industry. I started reading WHT sometime earlier in 2003 and eventually registered in August.

But I got to there because I was kinda new to the whole internet scene. Had host after host that sucked. And landed here while trying to find one that didn't.

I had this cunning plan where I rent server and spam relevant forums with the links to signup form for underpriced hosting packages. WHT seemed like good target.

I got into this business a little over a year ago. Knew very little about it, so I needed to educate myself. My boss suggested that I go to WHT and start reading the forums, all posts, to familiarize myself w/the industry.

That was the original question, right? How did we FIND WHT?!?

I came here after reading another site about a user charged $16,000 for overage on his "unlimited" web hosting account. The angry customer posted here and linked to his post from his website. Lurked for about a year before registering an account.
If you have to operate your company behind the scenes or under a fake name, maybe it's time to leave the industry and start something fresh.

Back then I was working for APlus.net, someone had posted some true but damaging information about Aplus business practices.

I wonder how many times that "true but damaging information" about a host, posted on WHT, has been strongly denied by the said host?

Yea, we had our manager back then Mark Drake come on and lie about it, it was when Aplus was discovered to have put own links to all hosted clients sites to gain higher ranking on google.

I don't remember... more than likely through google after whatever host I was with at the time started having issues.

I do remember after being here that people were willing to help... although there were a few "jokers" around then who were not very helpful. I stopped showing up on a regular basis until the new management team came in... good place to visit now.

In all I've used wht to find three great hosts over the years... much better than those "hosting directories" I tried before finding this place... lol

The first host I was at turned into the closest thing to a parked page you can be without actually being a parked page.

    That was then - http://web.archive.org/web/199712220.../Pricing_2.htm
    This is now - http://www.stopat.com

Funny thing is, they didn't need to edit much code to get there.

I was originally here a while ago after a conversation on an IRC network.

My friend Brain from ChatSpike told me about WHT and I was hooked right away.

I was working with Chicken on another forum and he often cross referenced abusers and patterns with the same members here. I first started using it for the same purpose and eventually signed up.

Back in May 2004, someone on the old HTMLHelp.com BBS was talking about WHT. I came over here to see what they were talking about. I saw a thread that was begging for a response. So, I registered, responded, and not quite 9,000 posts later, here I am
