Social sites hate SEOs. They contribute more spam that useful content.

AmyWilliams, agree with you if to talk in general, but at the same time if your site produces really interesting and quality info which may be interesting for the social sites' visitors why not to share it (and gain these visitors to the own site).

A post in a forum site was inquiring if social bookmark sites have provided them decent amount of traffic. The poll result was a big NO. All said 80-90% traffic comes from the big G.

So, why is Digg valued at half a billion dollars?

80% of my traffic comes from Google. But this is a result of SB, I hate to say it, but if you SB a webpage give it 10 to 15 minutes and your webpage is searchable by Google. It's the fastest way to get indexed, hands down.

The purpose of Social networks is not to boost anyone's rank in search engines. It is a place where to bookmarks useful content, to learn and communicate. An if you are helpful enough peoplewill pay attention on your website.

I think the perceived value of Digg is in the Ad-Space. You couldn't aim to buy Digg and make money from being a good place to do SEO. You'd buy it because it has millions of visitors per day, and they're mostly a very narrow demographic.

The value of Social Bookmarking sites can't be understood unless you take a minute to look on what kind of benefits it has. Just as it was said before, they are not meant to increase your page rank just from their site. The readers that come directly from a social bookmarking site to read an article usually leave after they have read it. While this is a disadvantage, you will be putting your article out their in front of the eyes of fellow webmasters. If you have a high-quality articles, chances are that webmasters will want to cite your article if it is related to their site in one way or another. This is what can help page rank because once you start getting high-quality links built, Google will start looking at your site as authority on the specific topic. Not only do you have the chance to get other websites to link to you, you build your reputation by providing high-quality articles.

SBs are a really good way of getting a nice kick start for your site/blog/forum. Apart from that it really depends what your audience is interested in, as the SBs might not be capable of targeting this particular audience.

Lol.. You need to read more angilina..

Jenifer Laycock built an entire online business selling Bento Boxes using nothing but social media and at the same time blocking ALL search bots from her website in her robots.txt file..

Seemed to convert just fine for her..

Now, if you are talking about the typical watch me spam a social network to get traffic, then yes, social media traffic isn't all that great at converting..
