Are Webhost Companies Afraid of Google
Here's the slogan of Google Sites to entice Google's gmail users to build a website through Googlepages.
"Building a site is as simple as editing a document, and you don't need anyone's help to get started.
Check out these example sites:" sample 1, sample 2, sample 3 (all clickable)
Non-techie people may opt for this Google site feature.
Now, are webhost companies afraid of Google?
Yahoo has long entered the webhosting market. Should we watch out for Google's invasion?

I tried building one but it got removed for violation of program policies without any explantion of what exactly I had violated.
And my account showed a message with a link to the list of possible violations which my site had nothing to do with. I was just trying it out for a real estate listings website with data from google base.
This site has been disabled for violations of our Program Polices. If you feel this disabling was in error, please visit our contact page to let us know. Contact Us
I am not even going to find out why my site was deleted since it is much more easier to build on a paid shared hosting using a open source cms like Joomla. The best part is ofcourse I have total freedom from any invisible website eating monster lurking in the server

I'm more than happy to pay fluidhosting.com my cash every 12 months for the service and support offered.
I would not trust google hosting my sites, even if YOU (the op) paid me the cash that I pay FH. (google could not host my sites anyway.)
Although, I did test the new google sites and can see it working for some projects I want to manage in the future. The only way to get that type of stuff now is through sharepoint server (and maybe some other free sites, but I don't know about them). Plus, most people I work with have a google account... it is a nerd thing btw... lol.
I don't mess with google that much... love their search, but for email, they can't touch everyone.net... yea, another paid service... sometimes when you go free, you get what you paid for.Windows 10 to Linux and Mac OSX: I'm PARSECs better than you. Eat my dust!!!

Why would I be scared of Google? Ok maybe there the biggest company on the internet. But with being the biggest company on the internet theres the downfall.
Also they will probably have strict restrictions in place and wont give you a reason if they kick you from their service.

I know some may disagree with me... but I think it is a good thing.
New companies/people go to google sites, and build a BS site.
They outgrow that site and then move on to a "real" hosting company.
Or they stay at google with a BS site but it catches on and more people want to get on the net...Windows 10 to Linux and Mac OSX: I'm PARSECs better than you. Eat my dust!!!

To answer your question directly -- no, webhosting companies are not afraid of Google, Yahoo or Microsoft.

I don't thing Google's potential would make any web host to leave the business. I think that quality shared hosting providers can continue to grow even if there are unlimited offers from companies like Yahoo.
Good dedicated and managed hosts will also continue to grow withing the next few years despite the competition and the lack of quality wich many of the newcommers produce.HostColor.com ★★ Edge Infrastructure - US Dedicated Servers & Europe Dedicated Hosting ★ since 2000

I don't, and no one should.
RajanUrs gave a perfect example why. You'll kicked out, without knowing why.
Also they cannot provide personalized support. When you ask a question, you will always get some sort of canned answers, links to faq pages, knowledge databases etc. No immediate solutions for the problems.

There's nothing for hosting companies to be afraid of. Google may be a great resource and provider of other services, but their support will become very impersonal for Google Pages, and you will not get the same service and features as with a real hosting company.

I do not think there is any need to be afraid of Google Apps or Google Pages. They are meant for different segment of market which anyways already has huge competition.
I believe web hosting offers much more versatile solutions to end users. Specialized application hosing like oracle, sharepoint, exchange, CRM etc. are some of new challenging avenues where web hosting companies are playing major role in helping small – medium size businesses.
Big players like 1and1, godaddy, Directi and thousands of other small-medium web host already exists since long but I still see lot of potentials for survival of even small web hosting company.
Future of Web Hosting is great and will continue to grow with growing demandSunil

Google still has way too many limitations to be considered a place to host a decent site.

Google is an ICANN-accredited domain registrar. If it wanted to rule the universe and bury the domain registrars, it certainly wouldn't be referring customers to Go Daddy to buy their domains. Google's accreditation has long been a source of anxiety for some folks in the domain and hosting business, who worry that Google might one day offer free domain names, effectively absorbing the $6 per name VeriSign fee to acquire many more millions of users. But that hasn't happened. When a Google Sites user registers a domain they are sent to Go Daddy or eNom. Alistair notes that Go Daddy's signup process offers many free services that are also included in Google Sites. "It’s unlikely that people who come to set up a free site with Google Sites are then going to use GoDaddy to set one up," he writes. "Definitely a bad year to be a registrar."The domain name is the gateway to web hosting and e-commerce services. Go Daddy now manages more than 22 million domain names. The margins on those domains are thin, but there are much nicer margins to be had when those web site owners buy hosting services, dedicated servers and SSL certificates.Being a domain registrar has its challenges, so be sure. But business is booming in many niches in the domain business. Google Sites is a larger threat to web hosting specialists, most of whom aren't leading with their wikis at the momentLast edited by dotHostel; 03-15-2008 at 07:39 AM.

You have that right... google becomes a godaddy, yahoo, or 1and1.
Anyone remember when 1and1 came out and we saw these SAME threads!
Remember that special 1and1 ran and everyone said 1and1 would TAKE OVER and put everyone out of business.....
Seems to be enough room for everybody....Windows 10 to Linux and Mac OSX: I'm PARSECs better than you. Eat my dust!!!

It might take away some of the real little sites - but it's not going to help people who need ecommerce sites, need to install things, need "root", need specialized video services, etc.

I have never used GooglePages, but if it anything like any of there other departments (maybe besides Adwords) I bet their support is HORRIBLE. Even their adwords support department is a bunch of dolts 50% of the time.
To me, Google's support is up there in the level of crap of an AT@T, or Dell.
IMHO when prices get some competitive for shared hosting as they are now... support becomes a huge factor. I would guess eventually they will be so many free hosting companies... there will not be much profit to make on shared hosting. I could probably name 50 good free hosting providers in about 10 minutes of searching around the internet.
