Personally I would search like this:
    -First: The location (West-Coast/Center/East-Coast).
-Second: The network(I would look for a host with networks like Level3/Internap/Global Crossing/AT&T/SAVVIS and stay away from hosts with networks like Cogent (as main pipes)).
-Third: After that you could do a search for the hosts you have found meeting your above filled needs and pick the 1 that fits your needs (the most).

As noted above, a little more information would be helpful.

    What's your budget?
Are you looking for managed or unmanaged?
What type of server specs are you looking for (processor, ram, disk, etc.)?
How much bandwidth/transfer are you looking for?
You mentioned US -- do you care where in the US (east/mid/west coast)?

And anything else that may be important to you.

I think there are plenty of hosts in Dallas (incase you want a Dallas host like ThePlanet) who would even provide you a X3220 (2x 3060 in one) with these specs for under 200$.

Yes, but not in the central US .

    @ seachen:

I would just skip the other hosts, go with Softlayer and save yourself time, by not running into issues. (I still have servers with Softlayer, but I am happy that I left ThePlanet in time)
