dedicated IP addy

hey guys I just ran a reverse dns on my website and I found that my RZ account is hosted on a server with 916 other domain names using the same IP.

I was wondering if it would be benifical for SEO/SEM purposes to have a dedicated IP addess of my own.

any thoughts?

any other reasons why a dedicate dip would be benifical outside the scope of SEO?

Dedicated IP's are definitely not needed for SEO.

My suspicion is that it might affect indexing a site? It's just a humble thought, a secret suspicion lurking in my head.

No i belive it does not matter if you have a dedicated ip or not, effectivly all the ip's are linked into the servers dns system anyhoo else you would not be able to have a dedicated and have the personalised nameservers set to the 2 ip's your host reccomends you use,

It does not effect it at all.

Hi Ben, I ordered a dedicated IP from my host on the premise of a believe that it would boost site indexing.

So what is the benefit of a dedicated IP?

You can install a SSL certificate and also if you wanted to process credit card transactions you would need a dedicated ip, also it is needed for anonmouse FTP.

also there is some infomation i just picked out from google below that might help you.

Dedicated IP hosting and search engines

There has been debate in the SEO industry for awhile regarding whether or not using a dedicated IP address is better than having a shared IP for your website...
  • Some SEOs suppose that there really is no good reason to obtain static IP Web hosting. Your site will not perform any better by having its own static IP.
  • Some others theorize that your choice of dedicated IP hosting vs. shared hosting might slightly affect your rankings (i.e. it's a factor considered by search engines).
  • Yet others suppose that sharing an IP address with known spam or adult sites raises a warning flag with search engines, so some of them may respond by banning the entire IP address from their index.
Most probably, these fears are greatly exaggerated. Since the majority of sites on the Web are hosted via shared IP, it would be unprofitable to search engines to penalize a site based on IP. Search engines are able to ban anything on a domain name instead of an entire IP neighborhood. So it is search engine safe to use a shared IP hosting. Moreover, almost all hosting will eventually be shared in order to preserve IP addresses. "
If you think about it the host that sold you the ip is more likely to gain more money if you have another product with them.

A dedicated IP is only necessary if you need to access the site using only an IP and not a domain or IP/~user/ configuration, or if you need a private SSL on your domain.

As far as indexing, or SEO, that theory has been demystified by Google as a pointless technique.

In other words, if you got a dedicated IP to improve your SEO, then you're wasting time/money.

I am comfortable for now having a dedicated IP address. When I go for ecommerce sites, a dedicated IP would be useful for me.

At first, as I've said earlier, I chose a dedicated IP after reading some posts saying that search engines may penalize a site if its IP is shared with a spammer or adult sites.

Even without an SEO benefit, I still have a gut feeling that search engines would treat a site differently if it has a dedicated IP. I may be wrong, but I love to experiment things.

Needed and better for are two different things.

The engines will use reverse lookup to determine what kind of IP you’re on. If you think they don’t care, consider this: It’s been said that about 3 percent of all Web sites have dedicated IPs, with the other 97 percent resting on shared IPs. Research was then conducted analyzing the top 50 results for certain queries in the various search engines. The research found that 90 percent of the top-50 results were using dedicated IP numbers.

Three percent of Web sites use them, and 90 percent of Web sites in the top 50 results have them. Counterintuitive, don’t you think?

We thought so. In fact, we’ve found it so odd we repeated the tests several times, and each time we got the same results. We’ve even seen cases where switching from a virtual IP to a dedicated IP number alone has caused an increase in rankings.
