Whats a good server on ASO?

I've been with ASO for a few months and my site is down like once a day. I switched servers a few months back, but I still have the same problems. Does anyone know of a particularly reliable server on ASO?

I'm not too sure, but what is the downtime being caused by? Generally you should expect their servers to run very similarly. You've been on 2 different servers and both are having problems. Right now you have two options: 1.)Contact them and see what the deal is, and if theirs anything they can do. OR 2.) Switch providers.

Well, I heard all over the forums that they were a great provider if you could find a good server, so I came into it expecting that, I just didn't think it would be this hard to find a good server!

I hear they have downtime problems. Maybe it's time to switch hosts?

    Try switching to Locke.

Truth be told, one should not have to hunt for a good server. But, I should think that ASO's forums would be among the better places to get answers to the kind of question you're asking.

I'm not sure if thats a good reason to select a provider. If it were my business I would make sure that all servers were functioning properly and with similar quality. I've heard nothing but good things about ASO around these forums, I hope it's not another case of a hosting company growing too big for it's own good.

Keep us updated on how things go.

Did you ask your provider (ASO) regarding this? I mean, they should be able to transfer you to a less crowded server.

If you have to find a "good" server on a provider, why not find a good provider instead where all servers are good.

Have you contacted them yet to see what the problem is? That is their job, it isn't up to you to find the good servers, although I agree with WN-Ali, all the servers should be reasonably good/fast.

The server could be overloaded. Just 1 site that hit hard by ddos or heavy traffic can bring the whole server down.

Right. There shouldn't be a good server or a bad server. If you gotta post here to inquire which server won't give you trouble speaks a lot about ASO.

I was under the impression that A Small Orange was the provider of choice for a great lot of WHT's members

ASO has been growing pretty rapidly and it seems they're attracting more disruptive customers on their servers (which is to be expected). I hosted with them around 2 years ago and it was excellent back then, but I can't speak for how it is now.

What is the cause of this rapid growth would you say? I reckon that A Small Orange isn't exactly the cheapest host around.

Maybe they did or still do provide good service. Why servers could start to cave without any notice or consideration; we'll need to hear the other side of the story.

I tried ASO about 2 years back, kept having issues where my site would be unreachable for an half hour to an hour every day.

Even though my site is a personal only site, and nothing business I didn't want it crashing daily.

About a month ago, I decided to try them again.. and was let down the first day my site went unreachable, upon logging in via ssh I see the server was rebooted.

I gave up with them.. I went with Precision Effect and havn't had any downtime since. Only downfall is I can't host all my domains on a single account without paying for addon domains, but for this I signed up for Hostingpuppy's buck a gig and have my other domains hosted there. Other than yesterdays downtime I have had no issues with hostingpuppy either.

Glad you're happy. Yes, yesterday certainly sucked, but we're over it now.

Well sure, but where are A Small Orange to give their side of the story then? I'd be as interested as you to hear their view on this.

Perhaps someone could direct Tim to this thread. It'd be really interesting to get their view.

I honestly don't believe any company really grows and becomes worse off. What usually happens is the percentage of complaints stay the same, but the number of complains grow with the increase in size.

We have about 11,000 active customers right now. We were at 2,000 customers a little under 3 years ago. And we have about 4 times the number of complaints nowadays that we had back then. So, on a percentage basis, our complaint rate continues to decrease, but the number of complaints is growing. We've also got a proportionally larger number of shared servers to deal with, so it's more and more likely there will be a bad apple (or orange ) at any one time.

The big problem is that it's much more likely that someone is going to post on a forum about unsatisfactory service vs. satisfactory service. If nothing is going wrong, it's not going to get people thinking about their service. And as we grow, those numbers of complainers are going to grow. We've just got lots of satisfied customers that aren't posting for each of those complaints

Understandable. Impressive figures by the way. You've been averaging about 8 new sign ups per day for the last 3 years?
