    Mobil Broadband vs. Satellite

Doing a project at my parents house. They are out of the range for dsl or cable but they want a faster solution. They are currently using Wild Blue Satellite and it performs very slow. At times it seems like it is dial up. When temperatures reach below 28 degrees, they lose internet for some reason. More complaints but who cares.

Where they are at they are also limited on which cell company they can go with. Verizon nor Sprint has data packages that will work in their area. The other option to my knowledge would be Cingular Edge which ranges in speeds of 75 to 300 kbps.

I am curious about other input. Has anyone else experienced the Edge Internet speeds? Can you think of other cost effective solutions for $50 to $60 per month?

My only experience of satellite broadband was in the Caribbean coast of Mexico. A hurricane was due to hit so the ISP came and removed the main satellite in the town about 4 days before the hurricane and didn't bring it back until 4 days after it had left! Very frustrating!

If you are within range for Edge you will have a 'somewhat' decent speed, but you are still limited with latency.

I use my cell phone daily for net access..

I pay $30 per month, and get a 2mbps connection (only managed to get 1.5mbps so far)..

I get about 120ms ping when on CoD4 server in the UK. So not great for gaming.

But for everything else such as downloading, web development, streaming, general surfing, VoIP etc. it works great without any issues..

Edge is one of the slower networks out of the mobil broadband providers. What service is your cellphone using? I have sprint and using a USB I can connect to the internet from anywhere in the world with my phone. It's pretty quick too, and sprint is coming out with their 4G network soon.

I am in the same boat......I might be moving with my buddies where there is no cable or DSL.

    I NEED SPEED

I've never used Satellite before but I might have to. Verizon has poor coverage around here, really only Unicel works

    What do I do?

According to sprint coverage maps there is no signal where they live. So I cannot go with sprint.

    atech,

I'd recommend finding someone having a sprint card and testing it. I had internet from western Texas to northern new hampshire except about 45 seconds in total. it was incredible

Mobile broadband slows sat away! i was streaming video from my laptop the entire trip!

Just be very aware of the various providers AUPs/FAPs Many reserve the right to terminate or cripple your access if you go over a certain daily or monthly bandwidth limits.
You are unique, just like everyone else.

HughesNET (Satellite) service has residential packages ranging from 700Kbps/128Kbps up to 1.5Mbps/200Kbps. While I do not use it, I do have clients (business) that are out in the boonies and the only choices are dial-up or full T-1's, neither is acceptable so they went with a HughesNET business plan. It really works well and is quite reliable. Sure, during real heavy rain storms the connection sometimes goes down, but over all they are real happy with it and it beats the $850/month for a T-1.

i use hns internet as well. it has been very reliable even though were are in a severe weather area (bad winds/t-storms and heavy snow).

you are guaranteed to hate the latency.

we are close to the twin cities but have no reliable cell phone mobile connection out here, the best we could get is edge which totally sucks.

Verizon and Sprints coverage maps on their website show that their is no coverage in that area for mobile broadband.
