It is technically not possible. Unless one of the browser (if you are using a toolbar) actually connects to a separate datacenter.

Browsers has no effect on SERP. Must be a typical google dance. Aside from this, I couldn't see any other logical explaination...

If you are using toolbar SERPs are different. I have done the same. If you are searching form ggogle main page - the same.
I think that this is very important issue, because I believe thet many people use toolbar to make search in google.

Google toolbar for IE is (geo) location specific and Firefox's search is not I believe.
What is the URL on both browsers?

I don't think so. IMHO, SE position is solely dependent on the algorithm used by each search engine.

Just for checking's sake and to make sure you do get the same results in both browsers, therefore not browser-based and more likely to be based on where the search query is sent to (determined by where you type your query), do the following.
Go directly to google.com (yes .com, it will redirect you to your country's version if not American), and type your search term, click Search. Notice the position of your site. Copy the URL from your browser's address bar, now open your other browser, and copy it directly into that browser's address bar and make sure it's the same.
If not, something very weird is going on

I had the same issue, I think that must be a typical google dance like tell MrCat, this was a few days ago before and after PR update, now have same spot in 2 browsers.

It does appear some dancing is going down. I've seen some different results for the last couple of days.

Yes it does happen. If you're default google datacenter is in the UK and you are logged in your gmail account and make a query there - it yields a result from the ".com" (US datacenter I think).

Do you have the Google toolbar? Google does analyze your searching behavior and dishes out search results based on your previous searching behavior. Chances are you use Google toolbar in one browser and not in the other.

I have seen this before, its most likely a geo-targeted issue.
