Use max up to 4 keyword to optimize certain page. Less better. More - worse.
Use word-tarcker as keyword density tool
Good luck

About 650 somethings if you want to include that many keywords in your megatags..

It would be hard to maintain the competibility of all keywords tho, would suggest to pick less than 10 keywords to focus. Also remember to include these keywords in your megatag description and title and webpage contents, that is also good for SEO.

Are you sure you have too many important keywords. My experience shows they always are no more than 20. Anyway find any good meta tags analyzer and test your meta tags there!

According to SEO gurus, meta tags are no longer important in the eyes of search engines. This is due to the abuse by some webmasters who stuff their sites with tons of meta tags in the past.

For Google meta tag is not used anymore but there are still some other search engines that still used meta tag in their algorithm.

As zionchild pointed out, the meta keywords tag is basically useless as a ranking factor in the major engines. Who really cares if tiny engines that send 0 traffic use it still really?

As for keyword density, most old-timers laugh when it is brought up nowadays. That was basically disproven a couple years ago with google.

As for how many keywords you should optimize any single page for, try for 2-4 max. Make new pages and get relevent links to them for the other keywords you wish to rank for.

the best way is to place around 700 symbols for metakeywords. You must have no more than 6-8 repeat of every keyword, because otherwise the SE detect spam and follow penalty.
Just make optmization on the text. The density of one keyword can be no more 8% of the all text in the every page.

60 characters maximum. Unfortunately for some SEO, meta tags no longer give SEO weight these days.

This is some-what true, but not entirely. Meta Tags use to be the craze around 2000 - 2003ish with the larger Meta Search Engines. The old mamma.com etc... comes to mind.

Meta Tags are good to boost your keyword density, but I would not recommend using more than 200 characters in your meta keywords. Some engines like Google can sometimes low-ball your website, if the spider feels you are meta spamming.

IMHO I would use 10 of your important keywords in your title pages, and see how well this works for you.

My recommendation is, use a keyword tool, get your page contents analysed, get the highest paying words from your page actual contents and then repeat them in your meta tag. No more than 10 words should be used.

Doing this increases keyword density.
