    You can roll your own, which is easy enough, or look at a module such as CGI::Session if you don't want to create your own function/routine.

    No, cookies don't have to relate to sessions at all. But it's one way to do it. If you want to use cookies, you certainly can though. As for the sessions, it's just creating a session for the user over an active amount of time, so they don't have to log in again and can stay on the site active or revisit it without having to log in (depending on the duration of the session). There are many ways to go about it. Maybe check out the module I had mentioned if you're not sure.

    I've never used it and always roll out my own code, but sometimes using existing modules can save you a lot of time and headaches, especially if you don't want to code your own routines. You can see the module and examples on the CPAN web site:
