Open DNS Servers - BIND
Just being doing a load of DNSstuff.com queries to try and get everything to "pass", I noticed that some big players in the hosting scene have either open or closed DNS servers.
Softlayer.com have closed, while liquidweb.com are open...?
I have changed all mine to closed, just because dnsstuff advises it, but is there any reason you would want them open..?
Best is to have it closed... because of possible amplification attacks. You really only need to set it for local servers that it may be servicing.
open dns serve means anyone can use your server as recursive look up server. some people keep it open because they are lazy come with Access list for the dns.
Recursive look up for any should be closed.
hope that helps
To be more clear, if made closed, the below will not work. any_other_domain.com is any domain not hosted in that server.
dig @nameserverIP any_other_domain.com
