Boot question

Hello,

I have a problem about my server, after it is unsuspended, it is not actually working anymore.

I got kvm access, when i try to choose harddisk for boot option it says INIT: No inittab file found

and asks for runlevel : I tried 1,2,6 but none of them are working.

I am choosing the rescue mode than it is asking me for rescued login which i don`t know

Anyone have suggestion for what can i do?

Hi

Usually the rescue login is the root password.

Is it a Redhat based system ie Centos or Fedora Core ?

Thanks

Boot into single-user-mode and create the file /etc/inittab with following content. And reboot your machine.
Code:
id:5:initdefault:
si::sysinit:/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit
l0:0:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 0
l1:1:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 1
l2:2:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 2
l3:3:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 3
l4:4:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 4
l5:5:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 5
l6:6:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 6
ca::ctrlaltdel:/sbin/shutdown -t3 -r now
pf::powerfail:/sbin/shutdown -f -h +2 "Power Failure; System Shutting Down"
pr:12345:powerokwait:/sbin/shutdown -c "Power Restored; Shutdown Cancelled"
1:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty1
2:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty2
3:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty3
4:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty4
5:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty5
6:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty6
x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon

What does "none of them are working" mean?

While sparksupport's idea may be worth trying, I'd change the first line to set the default runlevel to 3 unless you're sure that X isn't borked.

However, sparksupport also mentioned booting it into single user mode and creating this file, as if you didn't already say that "none of them are working". You'll probably want to boot from some rescue tool and have a look to see what all is missing/messed up.
