    Or this one:

http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/unixnut3/. It's more of a generic SVR4 reference, but it also has shell stuff, sed, awk etc.

    Online alternatives

Ouch! Heavy editing of this post needed!

    The Linux Cookbook
    is available online for free!

The O'Reilly books are excellent, but if you just need a quick and simple introduction to the commands try a some of these:

    http://hotwired.lycos.com/webmonkey/...ide/index.html

If you do a search on Google you'll find a lot more, as a lot of the LUGs have beginners' guides and university lecturers usually include this kind of stuff in their online notes

    Get this book:

Red Hat Linux Networking and System Administration
by Terry Collins & Kurt Wall

I know it sounds daunting, but it explains everything in plain english. Step by step from installing Red Hat Linux 7.2, to mail, webserver, ftp, etc. -- and the last couple chapters are on security.

Go to Amazon and read the reviews on it. Then go to a bookstore and browse it.

You won't have to buy another book to understand this book.
