What does this mean: Time to live exceeded

My VPS has been up and down today. During the downtimes, when I try to ping it I get this message: From xx.xx.xx.xx: Time to live exceeded.

The xx.xx.xx.xx is close to but not the same as my vps's ip address.

Contact your VPS provider right away and see what's going on. There is probably a routing loop or something wrong within the internal routing of Virtuozzo/OpenVZ, etc... Run a traceroute and submit it to your provider.

Read about 'time to live exceeded' here.

    Good luck.

Generally you see that when your VPS isn't online, i.e. the vps isnt started on the node.

Thanks for the help. Yes, it was on the provider's end. Resolved now, thankfully.
