Server Overloaded, no idea where to start!

Hello all, I have been fighting with my VPS for a few days now over a high server load. It hasn't been under a 2.5 load since the 28th of Jan. It has since usually stayed between 4+ and 15!! Right now it's at 10.85.

The server is self managed. I made a deal with a company and got the server setup with a few months free, but when I ordered it, I misunderstood and thought that it was managed. Now I'm basically screwed.

When I login via SSH and run the top -c command I don't see anything using any huge amounts of CPU. I only have at most 10 small websites on the VPS, nothing with any huge traffic. I looked in the /tmp directory for any suspicious files using the cd /tmp command, but nothing showed up so I suppose it's empty.

Does anyone have any suggestions? If I can't get this fixed I might as well just tell them to shut it off and just write it off as a loss.

cd /tmp only gets you into the dir. Type
Quote:
ls -la
to see whats in there and who owns it.

Wow,,that showed up a ton of different things. I was told to look for short file names like SS and BSD, but all I see is session ID numbers?

Anyone have any idea what this is::

/usr/sbin/mysqld --basedir=/ --datadir=/var/lib/mysql --user=mysql --pid-file=/var/lib/mysql/seo.xxx***********.pid --skip-external-locking

It's the top process, using 3.5% of the CPU.

I edited the seo.xxxxxxx.pid part to protect the hosts identity.

if you need to ask what that process is, you should log out and hire an administrator to work on your server. asking for free advice on a forum won't give you the specific answers you need, and any conclusions you draw on your own likely won't be accurate or useful.

And if you have nothing helpful to post, you need not reply.

I posted this hoping that those that frequent this forum willing to help, would do so. I did not post it to hear people like you tell me to hire a server admin. Trust me, if I could I would, but I can't afford the $50 an hour (or whatever crazy amount it is) to hire a server admin.

I posted to try and save you some time. next thing you know, you have nuked your mysql software, then blaming your host for massive downtime crippling your business.

good luck!

Do you run a VPS or server? (not clear in origional post, or just me?). Yes, sounds stupid, have you tried a reboot?

It's just a VPS, and yes I have rebooted. It seems to run good for a few mintues after the reboot, but then it slowly climbs back up. Right now its at 14.85!

You are running a lot more than 10 small websites. You appear to be running Mysql ( a database server), cpanel and a mailserver.

If you edit your my.cnf file and turn on skip-innodb you might get back about 75mb of memory and improve performance.

As for cpanel, its a pig. If you don't need it don't use it.

VPS, high loadavg, processes are not using CPU -- it usually means exhausted disk IO.

Run top, and check the row says Cpu(s): where it lists out where CPUs spend their time. Check the percentage next to "us" and "wa" -- if "us" is high, that means your applications are using too much CPU time. If "wa" is high, which I suspect might be the case, then your VPS spent most of its time waiting for disk IO. Another way to check it is by running "vmstats 5" for a while, and check the right-most number whether it is too high.

You can't really do much if other VPS on the same server is thrashing the disk IO. Also if you are on Xen, make sure it is not doing too much swapping. If you have plenty of memory and it appears that it is your VPS that uses too much disk IO, you might need to adjust things like MySQL parameters so it gets enough cache/buffer and don't have to scan the disk for every query.

Easiest way, obviously, is to hire an administrator

Is it possible that the host did not allocate enough CPU to my VPS? At first, when it was running good, it showed 3.0Ghz under all 4 CPU's in the HyperVM panel, but now it only shows 0Ghz next to all of them.

Is there anyway to check and see how much of the CPU I have been alloted?

I just got a new VPS from Virpus, but I'm having a he** if a time transferring everything, it's taking forever!

Thanks for the help!
