What do you do for a living??

I have a funny feeling that not all of us on this forum do web hosting as a full time occupation and therefore I would like to ask if any of you have a Full Time Job, Part Time Job, University Degree or College diploma in any area? What you aim to achieve in the future?

For you guys that are in the industry full time, when you were a child or a teenager growing up, what was your dream career? If not the web industry, and what do you aim to achieve in life?

It's a random question, but I think it helps get to know people on the forum a little bit better.

Also, if anyone is a member of any organisations, such as golf organisation, flying, sailing etc then post them up!

My dad was a carpenter, so I wanted to be a carpenter, which I became when I was 19. I was also self employed as a subcontract carpenter by 20. I started my apprenticeship at 16 and completed 3.5yrs to become a fully qualified carpenter.

I'm a Project / IT manager for an aviation company. We sell aircraft parts (for commercial aircraft..737,747, A320, DC9 Etc etc). We also lease aircraft to airlines all over the world. I get to travel overseas a bit to work on these deals..which is cool.

When I'm not taking care of the IT needs for the company I'm working on models for various end of lease conditoins that deal with cylcles, flight hours etc etc..

I'm very lucky to have gotten this job I believe..currently 22 with a 4 year degree, and I'm already manageing people and working on multi million dollar deals.

The job description would describe what I do as network/system administration. Design, setup, administer the networks and servers at the higher education campus that I work at.
Basically the same thing I do in the webhosting industry, except there I am 'working for the man.'

Because of that I get the wonderful pleasure of having to attend worthless meetings. Three of every four meetings we have they are simpling listening to people read what their goals were off a piece of paper and if they accomplished them. hooray! People in the same division, but different departments, people that have nothing to do with IT. double hooray!

And then there is the politics. Always nice when something happens and it has to go up the chain to a VP over to your VP then back down.

I spend most of my time nowaday's contributing to the exploring and presevation of local history and sites of interest.

I also run a local photography website, and try to do as much as I can for a local forum.

When I have time, I run my business, but I am a bit too relaxed for my own good to be honest! New year's resolution though is to get my *** into gear and start working as hard as I used too... when I used to work for days without sleep etc haha!

Those were the good old day's before girls and the trouble's attatched to them were a part of my life.

My dream career... well it was originally an Astronaut (wasnt every lad's dream this at one time lol)... then it gradually moved onto the police.

Id still love to go into the police, but not much chance now, im 22. 3 generations of my family have been in the police in succession, with my cousin's currently serving in the Liverpool force, and I would think of it as a great honour to my grandfather if I could get into the police as he was like a father to me, and the inspiration for my dream career to be a plod.

Probably a bit crappy or boring to most people, but I love helping people and being within the community, and I am a very law abiding person and upbringing (to a degree I am anyway) and have a lot of respect for other people, but little or no respect for the criminal scum, so it would suit me down to the ground!

Well, I do full-time web hosting but a number of my side projects do help diversify my income stream a bit more. I've been doing web-hosting full-time since 2003, primarily under the umbrella of other companies.

Since 2003 I've had my own company on the side and went full-time, self-employed in April of last year. So far, so good -- 900 domains hosted Back when I was a boy though, I spent my days dreaming of flight.

Whether it be the airforce to get me started -- I wanted to fly airliners for a living. I joined the civil air patrol, got some hours up in the sky in a cessna and started working towards my goals. Financial limitations really set me back at the time, renting planes was expensive and I didn't want to burden my parents any further.

Just a couple of years later a few students (at the same flight school as I) decided to fly a couple of jets into two buildings you knww as the world trade center.. That just about killed that entire idea & I went with my second choice, failing at an Economics degree. You live, you learn!

I work full-time at ARIN. Growing up, I wanted to be in television like my father. I studied telecommunications in college, and after graduation, went to NYC and worked in TV for about a year. Gave it up after being disillusioned, and wound up in this industry 8 years ago.

Director of Communications for a hosting company. Get on these forums all the time to see what everyone is saying. My title is fancy for Marketing and PR.

Before hosting (only been in it for a year) I worked as a bartender/waitress until 21 years old, then got an Advertising job as a Production Manager (dealing with getting the writers and art directors to get their stuff done on time) for 6 years, then worked for a large format printing company as their Production and Purchasing Manager for 4 years. I'm all about deadlines, getting things done, I'm bossy, so it was a great career move for me! haha

I wanted to be a lawyer when I was a kid, then I found out how long you had to be in school and said no thanks. Actually never went to college, not one hour, got in entry level and clawed my way to the top. Not in the ways you are thinking either. I'd say I worked on average 60 hours a week for the last 11 years.

When I used to be in High School I used to design and host websites, did good enough in High School to get into Purdue's Aerospace Engineering School (ranked one the BEST in the world for Aero and Engineering), but after I got in, I was still designing websites and hosting them. I didnt have enough time for my studies, yea, imagine that.

So I dropped out and officially incorporated my company since that is what I would be doing as full time.

Unlike most parents (or dad's I should say), my dad was very supportive throughout this time, when I was going to Purdue and when I dropped out and wanted to do my web hosting business as full-time.

I used to run a web hosting company. I enjoyed many aspects of it, and hated other parts of the thing. But it was a great experience.

When I was in HS, I always want to be a DJ... but it ended up in our own Mobile Sound System.

I don't like Boss, so I started my own business since 2001 and it is my full time job/business. It is better than any other of my job and business...

I got 4 children and 1 more coming soon... My wife's graduated in Architecture and is helping me with my business also.

I love my business... Soon, I will add more business locally for computer store since I took some course in computer hardware and such...

My two ambitions as a boy in life was to either fly fast jets for the airforce or run my own succesful business. I chose the latter, but I've come very close to signing up for the former.

Now I only get to fly at 100odd mph in a Cessna 152 as I go for my pilots license

I've been working as a HPUX/Linux sysadmin for a telco for the past 7 years, but looks like my job is going to India in the next couple of months.

So might give up on corporate IT as it all seems to be going that way and look at become a pub landlord

But will keep doing the hosting and small contracts just to keep my hand in IT

    Web hosting full time.

I wanted to be a writer growing up, ended up somehow taking electronics and drifted into the semiconductor world where I worked for 20 years.

After that I became a web host and now spend all day and night looking after servers, programming when I can squeak a few hours out.

But my number one and most important job is being a Dad.
