Question

VPS and running services

Hi Folks,

I am shopping for a cheap VPS and have found 1and1.com, which seems to suit my needs (server uptime, and English speaking support staff not a necessity). Before I jump in, I have a few questions regarding hosting companies and their expectations of a VPS customer.

I plan on running the following services on this vm running FC6 (os noted from their webpage)

- bind9 : serve up external DNS requests (tcp and udp 53).
- postfix : redundant MTA to act as a failover for an MX pool. Requires inbound on tcp port 25, and tcp port 465 (plain text, and SSL based delivery)
- apache : small web server , serving up static html (tcp inbound 80/443)
- ssh : remote console access (tcp 22)

Poking through this form has pointed to numerous threads where customers must contact their support staff, requesting the opening of non-standard ports etc.. Which raises the following questions :

Do VPS providers, filter inbound/outbound traffic? Or will the IP address assigned to my VPS allow for unrestricted in/out bound connections to the WAN?

Am I limited in what software i can install on my system?

My assumption is that, this VM is my new playground with no network or process related restrictions ?

cheers,
rms

By default ports should be open on a vps. You can block/unblock them using firewall program installed. All softwares can be installed as in a normal server, but take note there will be memory restrictions.

What kind of filtration are you talking about? It's very rare that a provider would do this for legitimate in/out traffic. It's also best to ask the provider of choice for the clearest answer.

Hi

In my experiance you nromally just get an External IP and there is no blocking on that what so ever.

The only filtering/blocking is what you have in your firewall.

1and1 sucks big time in shared hosting. Have no idea about dedicated, but that's what's making me look for a VPS as my sites grow and 1and1 ___constantly____ is throwing out mysql errors, nether less there is no way to export mysql database no matter what you use - php admin, export via vbulletin, etc. it just chokes up at the beginning and u end up having 10 megs instead 100 megs db.
