I would like to help my friend to host his email service on my VPS server. His current shared web hosting unfortunately has a quota limit on the number of emails he can send each hour, which is very inconvenient for him.

I know how to modify the MX record of my friend's domain in his current web host using Cpanel, but I don't know how to set up my server to accommodate his email service. I'd appreciate if anyone can teach me how to do it. My server also has Cpanel/WHM installed.

If you are looking for remote MX to be configured on his server and receive mails on your server, you need to configure remote MX on his server for the domain and create a hosting account on your server. Create appropriate mail id from the account cpanel and mails will start routing to your server.

I had no question on how to modify the MX record in the remote server, but it took me back-and-forth some time before I decided to create a new account on my own server because I thought there might be some advanced solution using DNS settings to achieve that. My Google search returned nothing. It turns out that the easy solution works best.

Consider your server is A & friends current hosting server B

All you have to do is
* Create an account from your WHM for your friends domain on server A
* Change the MX record from your friends cpanel account to your servers hostname on server B
* Login to cpanel of your friends on your server and create necessary email accounts on server A
- You can login to cPanel using your servers IP/hostname with his username and password on server B
