(Ideas) Starting a Streaming Dedicated Company.
Hi Guys!
I would like some ideas to start a Streaming ShoutCast, Streaming Media company.
What do I need? I know that I need the licenses and a good server.
But the real question is.. what type of server?
Maybe for Streaming services, the CPU is not so important as the Internet Speed. Maybe with a P4 with 1GB and a 10 mb dedicated port is something good to start with.
I don't know too much about CPU specifications for streaming companies, thats why I'm here to ask you for you Ideas.
Thank you very much.
George.

Why would we share our secrets? To give you a head start, cpu isn't important, a dual core or dual core xeon would do the job, hdd and ram are on high demand when it comes to streaming. Get atleast 2 500GB disks in raid1 and atleast 2GB of mem.

it all depends of budget as always. Streaming any type of content can cost a lot! a start would be an unlimited/un-metered server and yeah disk space and RAM are what you need. fdcservers.net seem to offer some good(ish) deals. The speed isn't too good for me in the UK(450-500k max) it's maybe better in the US. But if you wanting to startup a company that provides CDN type services (i.e limelight/Akami) I wouldn't waste your money

If you could model your company after any on the web, It'd probably be primcast.com . They're one of the leaders , I've used them for months and months, nothing but good things. I know their servers aren't beefy, but they offer unlimited listeners/viewers.

10 mbit/sec will get you a very small start, keep in mind you will need to provide more bandwidth as your customers sign up. You will also have to deal with the competition take a look at RadioToolbox http://www.radiotoolbox.com/hosts/ to get some general ideas. Some of the providers who come here on the forums may work a good deal for you on bandwidth, Data Centers who have multiple Gbit connections to the backbone are best.

Depends on the streaming strategy you have.
Personally i will look for:
1. Bandwidth (most important)
2. CPU
3. RAM
4. HDD
Live Streaming -> small HDD (unless you will run the Encoder and Content form Server)
OnDemand Streaming -> bigger HDD (Space for content)

Go for unlimited bandwidth, or just give up.
Cpu, quite good
Ram: 4k+
Hdd: not needed more than 80..
I has been owner of many netstations, and i can say by sure.
theres not much market for it, not here in norway atleast.
Because our license is expensive + Almost everyone get sponsed..
so be careful with ordering so you won't go in minus.
