    HyperVM - Windows

    Hi,

Windows is not officially supported in HyperVM. At least, according to the support team.
The problem is that I see a hughe difference between "supported" and "might work". Is there anyone here that installed Windows server on a HyperVM/Xen box? If so, can he/she discribe shortly how he did this?
I'm going to the DC next sunday to reinstall my server (2k3 to CentOS), and I have limited time to look things up, since I only can say for a couple of hours.

I tried Xen/Windows about 2 months ago and was a total and utter mess. Random crashes/hangs. (btw this is Xen not HyperVM causing issues)

If you want to do VPS/ Windows look at Virtuozzo for now as its really not that great. The alternative is to look at something like VMWare/VMPlayer though you will want to check the license on that

Can I ask how you installed it in the first place?
And if I got it correctly, its Xen(source) causing the problems, not HyperVM?
The Windows VPS is for my usage only, and not for reselling, so it wouldn't require a fancy control panel, as long as it works it'd be fine.

I tested during 15 days a VPS 512MB running W2K3 Enterprise from VPSLand and it worked fine -- the server runs Virtuozzo.

You will only find out how good a provider is when the going gets tough

Virtuozzo isn't an option, its too expensive.
All I need is software that can virtualize Windows and linux, and basic things like stop/start/restart, IP Addresses, traffic, etc. As far as I know, Xen+HyperVM is the only solution that normal people can afford.

Look into Linux if you want something normal people can afford, licensing costs for VPS and Windows will run you over $1200 easy.

Thats not really a part of the original question anymore, the original question was, did anyone manage to install a Windows OS on Xen/HyperVM, and if so, can he/she give a short description of how he/she did it?

Have no experience with Windows on Xen, but my laptop is currently using Windows on KVM (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kernel-...rtual_Machine). My base OS is ubuntu.

KVM is a hardware virtualization tech, and most modern CPU support it. It's free, easy to use, and fast.

Windows is now officially supported on HyperVM. And with RedHat 5.1 it works very well. Actually, we had windows support for more than 5 months, but didn't officially announce it because Xen on Redhat 5.0 had a lot of bugs, but all of them are fixed now. We also have full disk management via ntfs tools, and even very efficient backup restore.

And yes, this is real virtualization, and has no limitation like in containers. As a matter of fact, as hyperVisors become more and more mainstream, container virtualization will be made irrelevant.

Please check our hyperVM windows forum for more info.

Do you have a Windows system template for HyperVM?

You can check our wiki on how to install windows. MS EULA prevents us from distributing Windows in any manner. Even evaluation versions.

The procedure is very straightfoward. You will need to install windows on a VPS first, and then create an ostemplate out of it.

@Hello-world: thanks, I'm delighted to hear that.

If you'd think a bit logical, you would know that wouldn't be possible.
Windows isn't a free OS, where the Linux OSses/templates are. Further, can you say how many Windows 2k3 versions there are, without looking them up? I can get as far as Windows 2k3: Web, standard, Enterprise, datacenter, CAL, DCAL and SPLA versions.
That would be quite a large amount of templates.

Xen windows is going to be one of the most stable virtualizations around. This is because xen-windows is now the key to the entire product strategy of Citrix who are now selling it as their XenDesktop system that virtualizes and streams windows desktops.

Xen did have a lot of maturity issues till now, and which is one reason why we never overtly promoted it, but looking at the way things are going right now, Xen Windows virtualization is something you can really bet your future on. We now have Citrix, which is 6.61Billion dollar company, betting their entire product strategy, and thus their entire future on it.

    Thanks.
