Really confused trying to choose reasonably priced host for several sites, please hel
Hi all, i will try to explain my situation the best i can. I need to find a host that will host several (3 currently) sites for me, i will need to migrate a wordpress blog to it. the websites will consist of a mix of kompozer built ones and at least one (probably more later) CMS based one (like wordpress, that work off PHP and mySQL). several will have their own domain names, and some may use a subdomain.
i already have the domains registered with a separate registrar (godaddy) so i dont need any free domain names
my budget is around £5 a month, however i would prefer it to be less, obviously
reliability isn't really of paramount importance, as i dont plan to make much if any off this, but obviously i want it to be up most of the time..... (99% downtime is not acceptable!). what is quite important though is honesty and decent support, along with not meddling with anything....
the final thing is that a lot of bandwidth is really important, as i would rather my site not go down if it gets a large traffic spike from being posted on a popular site such as digg, hackaday, etc.
these are the following hosts i have considered so far, from recommendations from browsing here in the most part. but obviously feel free to recommend anyone not on this list.
imageleet.com/plans.php
these guys seem to offer a nice amount of bandwidth but.....
"Clients should not run any process that takes more than 60 CPU seconds and should not use more than 15% of overall server resources."
"Customer agrees that bandwidth and disk usage shall not exceed the number of megabytes per month for the Services ordered by Customer on the Order Form and must be fairly distributed over the month"
this could be a problem with traffic spikes, and pretty much makes their large amounts of bandwidth useless
idxnetworks.com/webhosting.htm
i am a little leery of anything that says "unlimited" and i cant find their TOS anywhere
fiber-hosting.com/Shared-Hosting.php
these people seem to offer a lot of bandwidth, but the links to their TOS and AUP are broken!
gazzin.com/linux.htm
not really great bandwidth, but they look honest at least.....
silentflame.com/wiki/Home
the bleeding heart in me loves that they are effectively a charity... but i dont think it has what i need
i was also going to consider hostgator.com as they seemed popular however "Examples of unacceptable material... .... hacker focused sites" makes it useless as a lot of the stuff i want to put online is to do with hardware hacking etc.
please help me before my head explodes from trying to figure out all the con men from the honest web hosts......
thanks very much in advance........
ps: (sorry if the formatting looks a little off..... i spent half an hour formatting this only to be told i cant use formatting tags....)

Every host has a limit on how much you can use. And making it to the 1st page on digg will certainly bring the server down, so don't expect any host (even if not mentioned in the tos) to not kick you out.
Last time a guy made it there the server load went up to 122.

Some may work with you (especially if you know it'll happen in advance) to do what they can, within reason, to keep you up during those trying times (so long as you stay within your bandwidth allocations or agree to pay additional costs).
I know we've temporarily moved shared accounts to their own VPS or dedicated when they were experiencing traffic surges to have a win win instead of just suspending them.
Some hosts will do that for you, you'll just need to ask.
Good luck on your search!

It depends on the customer's application, the hardware, the web server, etc. For WordPress blogs there's WP Super Cache which can help tremendously.
This is not something you can generalize due to the variables mentioned above, however from our experience we haven't had any issues with Digg in a shared environment, certainly not a load of 122.
If you do your best to make sure your application is as efficient as possible (caching is great) and pick a host with lightly loaded servers, you shouldn't have any problems. Even then, if you're willing to take a risk, I know people who are able to pull this off on very inexpensive hosting accounts when using WP Super Cache.

hi, thanks for the advice so far.
i forgot to mention that the pages that i would expect (read: hope) would experience traffic spikes would most likely be static html pages (kompozer made)
Jay H: did you charge extra for that? if so how much?
also, why did several posts that were emailed to me get deleted? one looked spammish but the other looked quite normal?
