Please do this: Connection Speed Test

Hi All, I'm looking to get a new dedicated server - however one thing I need to look at is speed to the UK.

So I was wondering if you could download these files and let us know how fast they downloaded, along with your location and ISP connection details. (see my results as an example)

    Softlayer: www.softlayer.com/downloads/test.zip

    LiquidWeb: www.liquidweb.com/data/10mb.bin

    Servstra: http://72.36.238.110/testfile.zip

    Thanks in advance!

Thanks all, please keep them coming no matter where you are from - just put your country down so we get to compare.

Brook: can you post the plan details from each of those 3 hosts where the test files are located? Not all hardware and plans are created equal. Thanks!

From Los Angeles (100 Mbps line):

    Softlayer: 2.41M/s
    Liquidweb: 973.85K/s
    Servstra: 6.18M/s

Obviously NOT from the UK, but maybe good for reference... for others.

Hmmm, interesting that softlayer is the slowest out of everyone and servstra (the fastest) is also in Dallas.

    To the Netherlands (100mbps connection):
    Softlayer: 1950kbps
    LiquidWeb: 2017kbps
    Servstra: 493kbps

They need to make the test files 1GB. 10MB is way to small.

Softlayer: well over 1000KB/s, to fast to tell
    LiquidWeb: Between 500-600KB/s
Servstra: well over 1500KB/s, to fast to tell

    Location: Mesa, Arizona

I agree with vipeax, get a file between 100mb to 1gig for a good test.
If you want a test file, download this and maybe upload it: Here
It will help us know exactly.

Those are the test files that each of the companies put up for people to use as a test

There is probably a very good reason why Servstra is coming out tops - they use the SAVVIS IDC datacenter which is widely regarded as one of the best data centers in the US:

The Savvis IDC houses Fortune 10,100,1000 companies in its data center along with many government and other large corporations.
A bit like how TelehouseUK is regarded as one of the best in Europe.

Softlayer: ~60kb/s fluctuates badly from about 30kb/s up to 80
LiquidWeb: ~250kb/s (pretty much maxxing my connection)
Servstra: ~250kb/s (again max of my connection)

Northeast UK Sky broadband Max upto 16mb but due to my line length i only get 2-3mb so 250kb is about max

I agree with this 100%. I've seen some test files around 500MB, which makes testing much easier and meaningful. 10MB today is already "small" and is almost useless.

Yes, when you flash your eyes, the test is done.

Seems the softlayer test file has problems, I could get full speed from my server there.

Can everyone please also post speeds for this test file:

    72.232.186.131/testfile.zip (http)

This one is also Servstra, but located at the DataBank datacenter, instead of the Savvis IDC datacenter.

    Thanks!
