phpmotion causes server crashed?
Hi there,
I am dreaming about a video sharing website.
I found phpmotion (http://phpmotion.com) and thinking about using this script, not only it is free but also it has the funtion that alow direct transfer video files from youtube to my server. Moreover, the phpmotion community is lovely.
The problem is that my hosting provider said this script is bad.
While it will run on our servers I have heard nothing but bad things
about this software on our servers. For quite a while it has caused
issues to the point of crashing our servers but just recently (in the
last couple days) we have found ways to put limits on our systems which
should effect other programs/processes which will prevent this software
from crashing our servers so whether or not this would be ok to run on
our servers is a big *maybe* Alot of the issues appear to be related to
the fact the software runs php by executing it via shell using the php
executable which isn't really good considering that on our servers it
will always make it use php4 which might not be what your site is
running. PHPMotion is pretty much the only software I have heard
discussed and has caused major issues on our servers so if you could
avoid it I would definitely suggest you do! If you asked me about any
software which is reported to have/cause problems on our servers without
even mentioning phpmtion I would have answered phpmotion as that is the
only one I have heard of which causes tons of issues.
1. Do you have the same experiences with phpmotion?
2. How can I reduce the problem?
3. If phpmotion is really bad, which video sharing script should be recommended?
Thank you very much for your help!Domain coupons collection @ LuckyReg.com

Well, I have not heard of any issues but you may want to contact the company who makes the script.

One thing to keep in mind regarding PHPmotion. It is a great script, and I see it only getting better. However, the script converts all video type to FLV. Conversion eats a LOT of resources. And, though the software may run on a server, it doesn't mean the server in question has the resources to do the conversions properly (i.e., without crashing). Hope this helps!

Not only that, PHPMotion is free. Don't remember if it's GPL, but it is open source (no encryption). Plus, the user community there is rather friendly.
@ImageLeet - I'm not saying that PHPMotion is a "problem", so much as video conversion, from what I've been told, chews resources, and not all servers may be configured to handle that kind of load. Sorry if I wasn't clear - wasn't blaming the host, only trying to say that you have to be careful of what hosting environment you choose to run it in.

i was replying to the OP
yes as you pointed out someone might be uploading 100-150 MB of videos regularly through phpmotion on their servers for which it was never ready. If servers are already overloaded then they take even more time for conversion and process gets completed in 20-25 minutes.█ Imageleet.com - Premium Hosting Solutions Since 2006

I'd recommend you to find another webhosting provider which allows to use this script and has good experience with it.

Do you use a script to do that?
