Try grepping for established connections only.

What made 990 too many?

You didn't say what HTTP server you're using, and whether you're hosting more than one site on the same server.

You may just need to increase the MaxClients setting, or increase processor speed and memory. Removing modules that you're not using can make apache use less memory so you can run more children.

Did you already check your logs if these httpd childs were from valid visitors and not due to a service-based http attack? Because if it's the 2nd, I'd suggest to work on filtering it than giving to it more resources.

Otherwise, following Unknown_1's & bitserve's suggestions would be a good start. Posting more information about your configuration (O/S, web daemon/version, basic settings) may also help.

Uknown_1 makes a good point. Download managers tend to open up multiple connections to max out bandwidth. You may want to find a way to limit the number of connections per IP address. A reverse proxy may help too.

How many connections per IP is too many? How do you distinguish the bad (wget, DL managers) from the good (SEO boosting spiders)
