Performance: Apache 2 Prefork vs Apache 1.3

I'm building a new server for a predominantly php5/mysql5 website and was wondering which version of apache to put on. I know there are some issues with PHP and Apache in MPM, but what's the performance comparison between Apache 1.3 and Apache 2 Prefork? Anyone know?

I don't see significant performance improvement when using apache2.

Search on google return some results saying that there's little improvement.

I think it's totally up to your choice.

I agree that there is very little improvement between 1.3 and 2.0. The real improvement comes with 2.2. See:

Which shows some of this. you can find more on the web. Since I moved to 2.2 I have never looked back.

I haven't seen a huge improvement in 1.3 to 2.0 OR 2.2.

HOWEVER, I don't stress sites out either. With 3 servers, it's easy to ballance things out.

1.3 will (eventually) be phased out to 2.x . Since 2.2 is the latest in the 2.x line, and (supposedly) the most stable, it would make sense to make that jump sooner rather than later. Of course, apache's been pushing 2.0 for years

1.3 vs 2.2 I often see increased memory usage when using 2.2.
