You can host 1 busy one or xxxxx html, simple domains that get no traffic at all.
It depends on the plans you sell and clients you attract.

We got 8 such similar server configurations and we host about 50~ accounts. And like Siropel said - depends more on your package. In our plans, we dont offer addon domains (but do offer parked and sub domains [nearly useless]) so these 50 accounts host 50 sites/domains.

And I am telling you an *average* number. Assuming each website gets 1,000 visits (not hits) per day.

And yes, we have tweaked the MySQL server and have a PHP cache - if you were going to ask that next.

like some said above you could run from 1 to 500 or even more sites on such a machine, all depending on the type of sites you have. And how well things get tuned.

@the op: most of the providers that host over 50 accounts on the same server with these specs uses external fileservers for the datastorage.

Last year in HostingCon someone said that we can host 2000 normal domains on such server. Any one had ever experienced more than 500 domains on this kind of server?

First of all hosting domains is not the same as hosting websites, assumsion made you are hosting websites, if you host domains (DNS) several thousands is not an issue. But i assumed you are talking about websites.

Websites, if they are static pages, and not having large amounts of visitors you could easy run 2000 on the server, but if they are dynamic pages and ones who get several thousands of visitors each day the amount of accounts you can run without performance issues will drop drastically.

What he is said is correct if they are just plain html sites. But if you have some very busy sites with a busy forum or something else using database read/write you won't be able to host many.
So it is very hard to say a definite number on this.
But if you monitor the server closely and is very specific in selecting the domains to be hosted you may be able to host a big number in the server.

Indeed, it basically only takes one site to "act up" to have all the other accounts suffer. Which is the natural behaviour of a shared environment.

You can host a bucketful of domains on a single server.

I would hesitate to bind a lot of ip addresses though.

But, that is hosting domains and sites, with a preference for depending on host headers.

Since this is WHT, if you mean hosting customers with the overhead of the usual control panels, etc. then the number will be substantially reduced.

I think that even for 1 server 0.0001 is to high figure...

Anyway, thank you for all comments. I was trying to find out general view about how many virtual websites usually every one host on this kind of server.

    Why is that?
