There used to be a site dedicated to collecting uptime from people's PCs/servers etc... It was called the uptime project (top result from Google search). The Wikipedia article on "Uptime" has the longest uptime at over 6 years (citing Uptime Project).

Some guy on IRC alleged he had a shell that'd been up for 700 days. He backed it up with multiple screenshots and photos, but IRC's never a reliable source of information

Why not? We've had Sun boxes that were up and running for 2+ years....

We had a Novell 3.1 server with just over 1,200 days. But, it was not meant to last.

I maintained a site that ran old Sun equipment and there were 2 Ultra 2 servers they had that each had over 1500 days up. They were on private networks so no need for constant security updates, they were just serving one single application. I have seen quite a few HPUX and AIX boxes over 700+ days in the past.

When I worked for a retail store, our main server in the receiving area had a 3+ year uptime. I left about 5 years ago.. curious how long it did stay up.

I've got a windows box thats been up for 299 days.

Quite feeble compared to some of your uptimes but still pretty good for windows

So, that is supposition on your part. It differs from reality.

When we've had these threads before I like to point people to:

    http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/today/top.avg.html

it is a chart of the top 50 alltime uptimes measured by netcraft, using data points spanning years of observations

    look carefully,

Windows is the os in 7 out of 50 entries
FreeBSD is the os in 8 out of 50 entries

LINUX IS NOT ON THE LIST, 0 out of 50 entries
not one of the top 50 uptime boxes runs LINUX.

But, windows currently occupies positions #2(1711 days) and #4(1618 days)

The position #50 is 1228 days, so they have never seen a LINUX box in their survey which has been up more than 1227 days, otherwise it would be on the list.

max uptime on windows 2000/iis5 @ 593 days:

    http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/graph?...atformlabs.com

the interruption in service on day 594 was due to the electrician unplugging the wrong cable.

Haha... Yes, you are not alone, I did that at first as well...

Anyway, I restart most of our servers every 30-45 days or so... I usually do it after I go do several upgrades at the end of each month.
