cPanel -- suPHP for spam?
Hi!
I have posted something similar on the cpanel forums however haven't received a response so I figure WHT to the rescue right?
I have a client account that has some kind of CMS that either must be out-dated or has some pretty serious flaws as it was used as a base to start a massive SPAM session. Over 2,000 emails were in queue when I noticed it beginning and so I promptly shut down their account.
Now, I am running Apache 1.3.39 and PHP 4.4.7, I've heard that you can compile up to Apache 2.x and PHP 5 with suPHP support. Do you guys recommend this as an attempt to prevent this kind of script spam?
I have contacted the client and asked them to see if they can update their CMS, but I would like to have a solution in place to take care of this in the future. Any ideas are welcome so long as they are compatible with the cPanel / WHM system.

Why don't you limit x Amount of mails per hour from within WHM Tweak Settings.
Any ways I am not sure how suPHP will help out going SPAMS, I think it can help tracing who or which script is sending them. But then again I am not sure if suPHP may break many scripts that does not support CGI version of PHP.
A possible solution I saw some where is at http://www.webhostgear.com/232.html now again I have not tested it but it seems it will work.Vinsar.Net - Quality Web Hosting at Economical Price on USA & European Servers

Thanks for the speedy reply! I do have the limit set in the Tweak Settings, and yeah it would be awesome if suPHP put the email under their account, which would be subject to the limit set.
However I wouldn't want to break their CMS haha I will take a look at that link.

suPHP is not going to stop spam all it's going to do is make so the PHP scripts are run as the user. This should probably help you a little bit with regards to handling of abuse users. The other option is to improve the logging of your exim installation. So putting the following in the first box of the advanced configuration part of the exim editor for cPanel:
log_selector=+all
After that you can grep the exim_mainlog in /var/log for sendmail
Then you'll get something like:
