My glass TV stand just exploded....

Didn't I just post a thread last week about glass exploding?

    http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showth...ighlight=glass

I must live near a nuclear plant of some sort because my TV stand just exploded. I live by myself and am home alone with my tiny dog. Me and my dog were in the other room and all of a sudden I hear a loud Bang!!! So I walk into the other room to find this...

The glass door of my TV stand exploded into a bunch of tiny pieces all by itself. Just a bit creepy

EDIT: The weirdest part is that the broken glass pieces are making crackling noises... it sounds like rice crispies cereal. WTF!

Creepy. It is either a nuclear plant, or the Oxygen channel that finally pushed the glass past its breaking point.

Look what were you watching on the TV. Ewww! - kidding, lol.

Maybe because of the TV load on the stand?

Strange. Have there been any explosions near by recently or anything like that? Maybe there are some underground trains or something causing sound waves to break the glass?

Maybe buy yourself a geiger counter just to be sure its not a nuclear plant near by

Glass cookware is one thing. But never cook with glass TV stand doors.

Yeah. Is this TV considerably heavier than the one that was on the stand?

You're too hawt Juliet, the glass items in your house can't handle the heat

No but seriously it's probably the LCD/plasma's weight, was it hard to open before?

    LOL

I just bought a band new wide screen LCD TV today.

The CRT which I removed from the nightstand was MUCH MUCH heavier. The CRT weighed at least 70 LBS. The new wide screen LCD is MUCH lighter in weight... plus the weight on the stand didn't push on the glass. Strange... and the glass pieces on the floor are STILL making crackling popping noises.

PS: I wasn't watching that movie... I was in the other room

I think the fact that the CRTC was that heavy it probably built pressure in the glass (is that even possible?) and then when you replaced it with the new TV it kind of released it ?

    Would explain the crackling noises.

At least you're lucky you don't have a glass stand, look what happened to this guy http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=713200

Scary thing is that we have a very similar one here for our 42" plasma.

Wow... this is why I do not like glass. I was planning on replacing my TV stand with a wooden one.

If my dog caused this she ain't getting fed for a week that little rodent.

EDIT: I don't think it was the weight of the TV because it didn't put any pressure on the actual glass door... maybe when I was struggling to lift the heavy CRT off the stand it caused an undetectable hairline fracture in the glass to weaken...

maybe some broken electronic is making a high frequency noise that matches the glasses natural frequency. I don't know the frequency for sure but i know it is too high to hear with your ears. But that would break glass. But it would most likely be other glass in your house aswell unless that is some kind of special glass.

But you were both in the other room.

Does your dog have any friends? Have you looked under and behind furniture for strange dog hair? Have you noticed random pieces of meat missing?

Weird, The crackling is probably cause of the tempered glass is just two panes of glass with a sheet of plastic between them, I've heard that kind of tempered glass crackle for a little while afterwards too.

oh, my mom had one of the glass glade candles explode on her kitchen table a few weeks ago.

    I vote for "haunted".

I once had a glass front oven do that, while I had some food baking. That was the scariest sound ever.

Wow that's absolutely incredible. My first guess would have been, as another poster said, an electronic emitting high frequency sound. Maybe its silly, but it would have been my first thought when it comes to mysterious glass explosions.

no, tempered glss is NOT just two panes of glass with a sheet of plastic between them. you are probably thinking of something closer to "safety glass" from cars and patio doors.

We had the same thing happen, sprayed glass all over the kitchen! Fortunately no one was in there at the time.

Maybe your washing machine was struggling so much with your comforter it sent out a shock wave?

Its a sign that ghosts are in your house and do not like what you watch on the TV !!!

    Time to hire ghostbusters...

Another reason to use Acrylic instead if suppose or wood as seems like those materials lie in ghosts free zone.

    cywkevin,

    Oh yes you caught me

I have so much money that I can afford to deliberately smash things in my home and throw my money out the window just so I can post it on WHT. I hope you were joking. If I wanted attention I could walk around my street topless... not post at WHT.

From your photo it appears that the glass is attached to standard brackets that then fit into the cabinet. The glass is attached to the brackets with screws that contact the glass. If the screws are too tight they can stress or crack the glass. If the brackets are mis-aligned you will notice resistance when you open & close the doors. This mis-alignment can also stress the glass. Adding a heavy object to the counter-top can also cause subtle pressure on the brackets. How long ago did you add/remove a heavy object from the top?

I removed the old dead CRT TV from the stand and immediately put the new LCD on it. Then couple hours after the glass busted by itself.

That old CRT was SUPER heavy! I am no weakling but could not even lift it. I had to slide it down sideways... afterwards I actually did notice the glass door was a tiny bit more resistant than usual when opening it. I think it was a tad out of alignment.

well it's quite possible broke due to sound wave frequency..i.e low bass...or volume. Music doesn't have to be played loud for the glass to have shattered...just needs to have hit that critical note.

either way I'm more pissed because now there is no way to see your reflection in the glass
