optermizing server for proxies

im hosting my proxies on one vps now as we all now they take up alot of ram and cpu so i was wondering if you have any tips on how to optimize the vps for proxies,

a few thought i had if you could help me put them into practice.
  • disable mail as i wouldnt use it at all
  • Catch php scripts and pages
  • disable cgi
  • optimise apache/php/mysql
  • optimise/make better use of ram
if you have any ideas on how to do this let me know would be highley apreciative

thanks
