Counting users traffic from shell; wget lynx curl etc

How would you go about accounting traffic from programs like wget/lynx from a user using a shell?

From what I've heard it's possible to count all traffic per user with IP Accounting or some other kernel option.

    Here's a direct google-search on this subject:

Yeah I need an app to account users traffic with out having an IP for each. The closest I come to is the ipt_owner module which comes with netfilter. But that only supports OUTGOING logging, not INPUT :/
