2.5 year review with 1&1

Support: -65535/10 - Replies for simple questions "can I add an AAAA record" - took at least 48 hours, half the time with an answer completely unrelated to question; absolutely disgusting, worst support I have ever seen, etc,etc (but never really had an outage, or anything, so didn't have to use support much)

Speed: 10/10 - Got at least 4.8MB/s

Uptime: 9.8/10 - hyperspin says 99.93% uptime in past year

Assorted notes: No SSH access on lower plans, the SSH that they DO offer can barely compile anything and is crippled and useless to me.

mod_rewrite is screwed up also, no support reply except "we support it fully"

Reported domain is about 1.8 years old, I've had 2 previous domains there that expired.

What kind of mod_rewrite trouble are you having?

RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule ^/index.php www2/index.php [R=301,L]

Works perfect on dreamhost, 1and1 just errors out randomly or doesn't even take rewrite into consideration

try

RewriteRule ^/index.php$ www2/index.php [R=301,L]

Does that work?

it's not even reading any rewrite rules; just giving me the /index.php

Actually, scratch that last message, try this:

echo "RewriteRule ^index.php$ /woot/index.php [R=301,L]" >> .htaccess

Also, I assume you've declared RewriteEngine On?

Nice review, haven't used there shared or any other plan, other than dedicated and haven't had a problem, maybe its me, but.. the support answers me, i don't email them i call them because they are large, and you have to expect it to take a while to reply via email. but calling works fine for me. is this a shared package?

Mark

don't plan on it.

$50/year for enough space just to use for some random file storage and have been for past 2 years, extremely fast downloads.

haven't really been any downtimes, never really needed to contact support, but it's nice to know they're never there for us.

and yes, shared

You're falling for their trap

Those things may very well make them perfect for a lot of people, those with simple sites.

From their point of view, it seems "perfect" but when things aren't so "perfect", ( even the best of hosts have some issue at some point), then we'll be seeing them around here "Help 1and1 did XXX and no one is helping me, why did I signup with them!".

interesting. When I was with them I had less than 99.5% uptime and slow speeds. But good review. Thanks.

I wish they had better support too, and cpanel.
