There are things that you should be doing right from the concept, design and coding stage...

1. Optimise the layout and design for users
2. Use semantic html markup (correct use of titles, metas, headings, lists etc)
3. Use CSS for layout and presentation
4. Unique page titles on every page, along with meta tags
5. Make sure your text copy is well worded
6. Add a sitemap

That's a start anyway!

If you dont know much about coding... Id inquire with a coder who specializes in SEO to help you out. He/she will be able to create to complete the list bluedreamer placed together. Also it takes months sometimes for these changes to take effect

The main idea about SEO is that your site works. People post links to your website on blogs or forums is a good indication.

You need consistent message and content.

Meta tags does not mean much. A good site to look at for details is searchenginewatch. Good luck studing!

Content is King. Without good solid content nothing else matters. Start with that.

* Web CEO

A great place to start is downloading the free program WebCEO . The good thing is that it will optimize your site for you, do the submissions, and all the other things you need to do to get indexed and ranked high. I used it before we switched to IBP but honestly, they seem like the same thing and WebCEO is free.

Here's some copy from their site:
SEO Software "Web CEO":
12 SEO Tools
in One Powerful SEO Suite

Web CEO is the most complete SEO software package on the planet; plus, our SEO software offers more for free than any other software package or suite for SEO.

Web CEO 7.5 is released!

It didn’t take us long to enhance the celebrated SEO/SEM software and introduce its new version to you. If there’s one expression to describe the distinctive feature of version 7.5, it is “complete automation”. See for yourself – the Dashboard gives you summary results of all your site activities, so a quick glance is enough to tell if your site is performing well; you build and keep your link partnerships effortlessly; the program generates and submits sitemaps; it provides multitasking support in Scheduler, and many more valuable features.

Read this book
Search Engine Optimization : An Hour A Day

Although it has been released since July 2006, it still contains valid information for newbies. It sets you up with a plan to start from searching for keywords to site optimization to paid advertisements. It's a great resource that I recommend for startups.

I would not recommend using any type of software that does submissions.

Such software will take the same description for your website and submit it to various directories across the web. You will lose the "personal" touch you need in order to convince visitors to click on your website's link.

Are you sure people developing directories and search engines prefer people using such a software.

Most possibly NO, and they invent methods of how to track if this is a manual submission or a automatic one. If you agree that your website will be put into a lower priority in indexing queue or blocked forever then you can try it. But is it worth it?

I was elaborating on what you said, and I totally agree that manual submission is better than automated submission.

Backlinking is one of the important point that can be never missed, you should try to get backlinks pointing to your domain name.

Correct, this is why you would like people to write blogs about your website.
