Everyone says: "go to offers section". Yet there are a few terrible hosts there......
Go to the offers section which everyone seems to be recommending to people these days:
You'll see one of the worst hosts there: 1and1. Why would anyone tell anyone to go there when you may end up going to a host with probably the most negative reviews out there.

Just highlights how necessary it is to 'do your homework' - find some hosting options then check on the reviews, the really bad ones will be easy to find.
Finding a really good one isn't easy and good for one person isn't necessarily good for another and vice versa.

yeah, you need to do a good homework before you can pick up a right host.
Also, it is against the forum rules to do self [promotion. so no host can tell you that "I will fit into your requirements".

I agree (though I have found 1&1 to be really good with some caveats)... what would bother me most about the offers section is that there are a lot of what I'd bet to be "bedroom" operations there. I would much rather point someone to a business that one can count on being there, is widely known to be fully "legit" and preferably has direct access to their servers (Hostgator being an easy exception to that last rule).
I am not saying that it's not possible for a "bedroom" operation to provide worthwhile services, but I do think it to be a much larger gamble with hosting. I would only recommend that which I would want for myself, and I myself want an operation that has an actual office with at least several employees per shift. I want them to be absolutely trustworthy with my personal and financial information. I do not want all of my sites to go down if their reseller account gets suspended.

I agree mostly with what you say Dave and yes..there will be the best and the worst hosts in the offers section....however the advantage is this.
At least if we recommend them to go into the offers section to take a look...we can also advise them to find a hosting company which suits their needs best and then use the search facility in here to look out for reviews of the companies they find.
I think it's better than the people just googleing blind for a host outside of WHT.
I do know where you're coming from though.
At the end of the day we can only advise...but members should also do some homework of there owm.
You wouldn't just jump into a car and give it metal before checking it had any brakes ....it should be common sense for nayone wanting reliable hosting to do some background work.

You cannot pick a good host by just searching through th offer section. But that will help you to see what different hosts are offering and you can start making a list of hosts that will fit for you.
and then you have to research on each host to find which will be the best fit for you.

totally agree there Matt...
the offers section should be used like a supermarket nothing else really.
it is the help people can achieve by using the search facilty afterwards to see what maybe other buyers have experienced that can help them on their way to finding a deal which suits their needs best.

Well of course they tell you to go there. Look at who is telling you to do a search, and then look at the offers in there. Notice something? It's an easy way for a host to promote themselves without breaking the self-promotion policy. I was reading a thread yesterday where like 2-3 of the same people kept telling everyone to look at the offers section. It was like leap frog.

Company representatives say that because it gives themselves a chance to be selected; this forum is mostly biased and bad advice.

Not just bad advice, most of it is just plain wrong.
Take any of the undersellers here at wht with their 'holier than thou' approach to sales. They're the 'obvious' best choice, after all. I mean, if they tell you they are, they are...right?

I agree or those annoying members who go on and on about how bad over selling is.
Let people choose who they want on their own needs and income not on what you think is right or wrong.
If they go with an over seller and have good server then good if they go with an over seller and have bad server then ok go some where else.
Its not about the fact I will be able to use that much or not its about service.

It's just a catchy slogan for many. Some actually take it seriously, and try to fix this somewhat bursting industry

But that's just my opinion.
