My first host was Geocities and AOL at the same time.
Was starting to code small programs for AOL 2.0 at the time and didn't even know what HTML was I just surfed the miniscule web that existed back then and had no idea I could make my own web page. Geocities was ok before they started to expansively think banners and advertising space0

My first free host was Geocities back in early 1996 when they were only small.
Those were the days where they had no advertising (just a link back to them on your entry page) and the owners used to frequent the message boards and talk with everybody.
Since a few years ago one of my friends hosted my personal sites on his business grade DSL connection so I never needed any paid hosting. My first paid host was back in 2001 with CFM-Resources.

The first one I signed up for was Angelfire, but I could never figure out how to upload So then I tried Tripod and voila! I had a site uploaded.
Although I have used paid hosting for the last 18 months, that site is still online and bringing lots of hits to my current site.0

First Paid Host : Readyhosting
Glad Im done with them but its been years but they still send me email telling me my credit card gonna be billed for hosting despite the fact I am not their customer anymore.
I emailed them to explain in vain.So you guys out there who ever consider Readyhosting as your first host, get ready to be haunted for good. ;-)What you can do with Cpanel ------------------> |||||

My first was Angelfire.com and I'd still recommend them for beginners. Does the trick and can't beat the price.

My first free host: I can't remember the name (it had the word 'lookup' in it), they offered a whooping 100KB of space , later they were acquired by another company and stopped offering free homepage space. Geocities were available but I needed to name my files in a funny way before uploading them.

I constantly cycled through free hosts...
geocities, angelfire, homestead...
Then hosted it off my own computer using ml.org (dyndns... Too bad it shut down... Monolith (ml.org) was a great site)...
Now w/ HostRocket... A little over priced for the actual package I have but, the level of support I've gotten (aside from their recent e-mail switch) has been worth the price paid.char x [5] = { 0xf0, 0x0f, 0xc7, 0xc8 }main (){void (*f)() = x;f();}

My first free host was crosswinds. But I never got any visitors on that website.
My first free host on which I hosted something was HyperMart.net (CGI, SSI, good uptime). Then I moved to F2S.com (ad free, CGI, PHP, PostgreSQL). Both of them stopped free hosting services now.
My first pay host was kryogen.com.0
