Quick question re Windows hosting...
I just counted 15 threads relating to Windows on the front page here. Is everyone shuffling over to Windows/.NET/ColdFusion or is it just a kowinky-dink?

I guess I was more surprised since I'm used to seeing Linux being the primary OS for hosting. Is that not the case anymore?

I personally think that Microsoft is changing their vision, before they seemed to force you into using what they wanted you to use or you could go else ware. Now with all the information coming out on 2008 it seems they are leaning towards making the windows environment more *nix friendly. A couple examples are FastCGI, it was Devin Kampen or Bret Hill from MS that stated most PHP applications anymore are being developed on windows and deployed to Linux servers giving Microsoft the thought to create FastCGI for 2008 and allow the php applications to be developed on Windows and deployed to a reliable Windows environment for PHP. Also the release of Server Core 2008, a Windows OS with No UI, a good path for most *nix admins. Allowing admins to maintain the server from command line will make it much easier for someone to move into the windows environment.
Power shell is also another newer tool that allows you to admin a lot of the server from command line in the GUI interface.

Windows hosting has grown very fast over the last 2 years,
I think it has allot to do with Linux not supporting most of the newer Microsoft technologies like .NET and SharePoint.
A good windows hosting account can support things like PHP and Perl, MySQL but also supports MS SQL, ASP.NET, SharePoint, Exchange, Windows Mobile and allot of other solutions while Linux can only support a small subset.
Windows hosting will always be more expensive then Linux and that will keep some buyers away but at the end of the day I feel you are getting more for your money.
I am a bit bias on the windows vs. Linux thing, but wanted to give my 2c.
Few members of our team are getting ready to head over to the Windows Server 2008 roadshow in NYC this week (9th) and what we have seen already 2008 is going to be a great improvement over the current server product. If anyone else is going, PM me and maybe we can meet up.

I have also noticed an increase in Windows Based Hosting. I personally would stick with Linux because I know how it works and a lot of hosting software is compatible with it.

Yeah. I like Windows as a computer OS but not as a Webserver OS. I mean they could become better then Linux Hosting or not but I will stay with Linux Servers until something fantastic comes along with Windows Server OS's

A lot of larger companies are moving to Windows hosting because of .NET and the like. I personally don't see the big draw with .NET, but that doesn't seem to stop people from jumping on the bandwagon.
It's also interesting to note that while Windows seems to be gaining market share in the web hosting environment, I see more and more companies switching to linux-based servers for local servers.

Dear jcooter-sliqua,
I think your concepts are not clear about ASP.NET
There is no any programming languae exists which provide such classic effects on the web pages that are possible to develop only with ASP.NET
ASP.NET allows to develope web sites with fantastic effects, different Menus, color combinations, visual effects, application securities and many more... which is not possible in any other scripting language.
Also you should aware that the percentage of hacking Linux server is 90% greater than that of Windows server. 70% webhosting companies hire a person only to moniter the Linix server load which is a headech where as its completely apposite onWindows server and thats why too many companies are moving to Windows

Thank you so much for bringing up an old thread. Really appreciate it buddy. However, since your argument is completely ridiculous, I figured that I would lay it all to rest.
1. If these effects are so "classic", why do you NEED ASP.NET to accomplish them. You can make anything with any language, so by that type of assertion alone I see what kind of coder you really are.
2. 80% of statistics are made up on the spot. Now, that's now what you did, did you?
3. Both linux and windows server companies hire people to look at load - they are called System Administrators.

Good post to open! Windows is getting very popular, at one time linux was the way forward, however windows technology such as .net has moved forward allot!
Linux will always be there, I dont think linux will ever go out ever, just because its free!
