Windows Host Required for Developer

Hi Guys,

Ive been searching around recently for a webhost to setup my online development area. The following are my requirements, so if you could point me in the right direction i would be extremly grateful!

Windows Hosting (durr! at least 2 gig space/50 gig bw).
ASP.NET 2.0 & AJAX 1.0 (3.5 would be even better, but i can wait until it comes out of BETA).
SQL 2000/2005 (I will need upto 10 databases, but none of these stupid 100mb database limits. I would prefer if space as taken out of my web space.
ISAPI_REWRITE module (i like to make pretty urls!).

I would prefer UK based servers, but i'll make do with US.

Thanks.

Matt.

Matt,

UK based servers will probably end up costing a little more, but will get you better ping times and maybe better page response times depending of the distance of the US based host.

Why not get your own dedicated box? Then you can install whatever you like, maybe even vm2005 to have dev vitual box on there? Depends what spec/speed ( say x64? ) on what you will end up paying.

First I time installed 2005 SQL.. was on a cluster.. from DVD.. what a fun night that was! Think i'm down to a full install in 18mins.. lol

John's right on the net speeds, definetly nicer being UK based allthough all in all I have never had a problem with stuff in the states, unless you can't get hold of them.

Dedicated hosting is usually very pricey compared to shared hosting, and takes a lot more time to manage as you yourself mentioned.

I think you might end up paying more for the SQL databases than the cost of a dedicated server. I'd recommend a dedicated server.

I think you can find these requirements from most windows reseller hosting providers, No need to look into a dedicated server.

Hello,

Well , UK based servers will surely cost you more than US based servers . I think you can try with a dedicated managed/unmanaged ( as per you) unmetered bandwith server. Hivelocity (hivelocity.net) is the unmetered , dedicated specialists with fantastic support. You should try with them.

Thanks guys, but...

Im not sure i want to go down the dedicated route just for myself. Surely their must be a host out their that does this level package.

If i was to purchase a couple of dedicated boxes (1 SQL & 1 IIS) and offer a couple of plans based on my above post, would their be a requirement do you think?

Im not looking to make money, just break even. Ive no problem managing a couple of boxes.

Matt.

Well i know of at least one... : )

There's loads out there that will do that for you, i reckon lease yourself a box and get yourself a semi managed box ( so they look after box and base build & licensing and you take it from there ).

Most are rolling contracts so with no huge startup or setup fee you should be able to break even. But that's just my theory!

Jim

Hello,

You should do some research here and should be able to select some good Windows providers that can do this. Sorry, but I am not familiar w/ UK providers, but perhaps check out jodohost and cartikahosting as they have been around for a while and have good input and reviews here at WHT.

Good luck w/ your search and best wishes!

talio, with your requirements you do NOT need to go on the dedicated root, it will cost you allot more money than it would have to.
