Acquiring an expiring domain
According to the whois, the domain name I want to pick up expired nearly 2 months ago and is registered at GoDaddy. The current registrar status is "redemption period". What would be the best way to acquire it?

You should create an account with snapnames.com. In my opinion, they are the best company at "catching" domains once they are re-released to the public.

If it's in Redemption Period, it's already been thru their TDNAM auctions and didn't sell. Any backorder at GoDaddy at this point is practically useless, since the domain will drop, and GoDaddy will compete with the other dropcatchers for this domain. They are much less efficient at capturing dropping domains (even their own). So if this is a must have domain, backorder it at SnapNames/NameJet/Pool. One of them will capture it for you. If there are other bidders, there will be a short 3 day auction.

If you willing to pay $60 + for the name, backordering will be best

I should emphasize that meant backorder at all three (SnapNames/NameJet/Pool) not just one. Your chances of getting the domain are higher but the cost is the same.

I totally agree with stu2,dnki,mtgm. If you have the 50 - 100 USD to spare. Don't make the same mistake I made. I was interested at this particular domain name, it was under "Pending Delete" status, immediately, when it got released (5 day lapse), it got "snapped". I don't know how they do this, there even was no DNS propagation, it was instant.

That's because you got all the dropcatchers and tasters hitting the registry servers the millisecond the domain becomes available for re-registration. There are certainly hundreds of servers hitting the registry servers simultaneously, maybe a thousand.

Well, isn't that some form of spamming or dos to the root servers specially when it is originating from an ip/ip range?

I'm not an expert, but I think it's not spam if they come from different servers. Also, I think there might be a few "rules of engagement" by which the same server cannot access the registry servers with a continuous stream of connections (which might be considered a dos attack). But dropcatching is a cuthroat business. I'm sure the worst abuses do take place now and again

stu2 is not an an expert, he is "the expert" hehe.
Do you know for how long dropcatchers or domain tasters retain the domain name, if the domain does not get bought nor get any hits? I remember this domain name, distroplus.com, now owned by a chinese company(i think), was for auction at snapnames, I entered into an auction and won, luckily my credit card got declined so I did not have to pay $59. hehe A few weeks after, I checked it again, and it has been released. I was going to register it finally yesterday but unfortunately, someone got to it first. Kudos!
