Website that checked speed of hosts home page?
I remember there use to be this website service which would check how fast each web hosts main website page would load and then rank them accordingly.
It was an interesting service. Does anyone remember its web address?

The best way would be to simply ask for a test file download from the host. Thats a more acurate gauge of download speeds.

True, but I wanted to find that darn website again....I remember where you put a script on your web server and this web site service would access the script and calculate a load time.
Anyone?

As said on the top, it is always better to ask the host for a file to test because many hosts will have their main site in another server or even in a different DC and the customer sites in another server.
So even if you check their main website speed, that will be different for your sites, if you go with them.

So true! I'm not saying I would ever go by what www.hostingspeeds.com in deciding on a host, but I needed to find the site for another purpose

I agree with Matt. You should look into testing the speeds of customer web sites, not the host site. The host's site will obviously be hosted on their top server.

Browsers like Mozilla & Firefox have built-in tools for things like this. One which is good for testing any Web page for speed and other details is:
