I picked up a Windows VPS

I was bored last night and decided to get a VPS to mess around with. I went through 1&1 and got the VPSII account. Here are the specs:

Windows Server 2003 (64 Bit)
20GB Space
1000GB Transfer
256MB Guaranteed Ram
....
Virtuozzo
Plesk 8.1 (30 Domains)
$39.00 a month.

Probably only going to host a few of my sites and several of my friends sites. I believe I have enough to more than cover the monthly fee, so it's like I have a scholarship. LOL

Looking forward to learning about about the hosting business. I am currently a reseller for GoDaddy but want to eventually make the move into my own dedicated server. I have to money to do it now but thought it would be a waste while I learn the ropes.

That's a good move. Spend time to understand the things well and as your requirements increases move on to a dedicated server.

Good Luck

Not very many. Mostly this is a practice/experiment/learning process. Since I have never had complete control of the whole process, I think a VPS is a good way to start. We shall see what this VPS can handle. Like I said I am not going to host that many sites on it, and most wont have much traffic at all, so it should be plenty.

I will try to post up my trials and tribulations.

The first thing you're going to find out is that plesk without any sites is going to use about 120M of your 256M of memory and you're going to need to upgrade fairly soon.

You'd be wise to upgrade to 512 fairly soon or you're going to start having memory issues. We recommend that you not install a control panel if you're going to start out with just 256MB of memory.

One of the coolest things about virtuozzo VPS's though is that you can make your own backups and restores, so if you totally pooch it you can just roll back

It is not possible to host many sites on a VPS with 256 MB RAM as Plesk, .NET 2.0 itself occupies lot of RAM. Make sure to check out the resource usage frequently.

Consider using DotNetPanel instead of Plesk. It will save your resources. And again, it will be best to get upgraded to 512 MB RAM.

Good luck!

Well i finally had a chance to mess with my new VPS. I accessed it on my MacBook using the Remote Desktop Connection Beta. Seemed a little laggy so I think I will give it a go on my PC another day.

Now for the trials and tribulations(t&t) Part:
As I mentioned earlier I am a reseller now and I picked up this VPS to teach myself how to do everything instead of just getting some small commissions from the company that does Super Bowl Ads.
Reselling is a no brainer, it's just sales. Hosting your own server (regardless if it's VPS or dedicated) is not a no brainer!! I have the basic concept of how doing a hosting business works but...there is a lot to get up to speed with. I don't think that any of this will actually be hard to learn or do, but I will have to figure out where to get the info on each little piece of the puzzle. I love learning new things so i know this will be a blast!

I wonder if there is an A-Z tutorial out there? I might consider making one since it will probably help my learning. Just a thought. What do you think? Is this needed?

Ditto the Dot Net Panel comments. Best to get addicted to DNP rather than get stuck with Plesk. DNP also support II7 now too . Happy VPSing.
