    Talking Language Pet Peeves

    Hi,

    now I'm no native speaker and often enough misspell stuff myself, but a couple of things really hit me each time I read them:

    their vs. there vs. they're
    whose vs. who's
    per say vs. per se
    to vs. too
    pray vs. prey
    elicit vs. illicit
    fainted vs. feinted
    taut vs. taught
    discreet vs. discrete
    reined vs. reigned vs. rained
    bare vs. bear
    navel vs. naval
    altar vs. alter
    effected vs. affected
    then vs. than
    you're vs. your

    and the one which really crosses my reading eyes:

    "could of" instead of "could have"

    Greetings

    OK

    I'll second this one.

    And some users have additional "signature-like" messages at the end of their each and every post. It looks so forced and unnatural to me. But of course, that's just me .

    I have v. I've got

    Guess what? You have something, you don't have got something. It's not "I've got a bad feeling about this." It's "I have a bad feeling about this."

    Internet v. internet

    "Internet" is a proper noun. Be courteaous and capitalize it like other names.

    Web site v. web site

    Ditto for the word "Web." It is a proper noun.

    More than/less than v. over/under

    "More than" is incremental. "Over" is spatial. You don't have over 100,000 page views. You have more than 100,000 page views. The same goes for "less" and "under."

    I see those mistakes every day, and they make me sad

    People here typing...

    "costumer" when they mean "customer".

    "simular" instead of "similar"

    "your" in place of "you're" (for YOU ARE)

    Those are my three biggest pet peeves. For some reason, the "costumer" one REALLY annoys me.

    The use of the word "over" is not only spatial. It's commonly used metaphorically all the time: "SoftwareRevue has authority over us."

    Eye ran this poem threw it
    Your sure reel glad two no.
    Its vary polished in it's weigh,
    My checker tolled me sew.

    A check her is a bless sing;
    It freeze yew lodes of thyme.
    It helps me right awl stiles two reed,
    And aides me when aye rime.

    Each frays come posed up on my screen
    Eye trussed too bee a joule;
    The checker pours o'er every word
    To cheque sum spelling rule.

    Bee fore wee rote with checkers
    Hour spelling was inn deck line,
    Butt now when wee dew have a laps,
    Wee are knot maid too wine.

    Butt now bee cause my spelling
    Is checked with such grate flare,
    Their are know faults with in my cite,
    Of nun eye am a wear.

    Now spelling does knot phase me,
    It does knot bring a tier;
    My pay purrs awl due glad den
    With wrapped words fare as hear.

    To rite with care is quite a feet
    Of witch won should be proud;
    And wee mussed dew da best wee can
    Sew flaws are knot aloud.

    That's why eye brake in two averse

    After reading that, you'll clearly see my pet peeve...

    Yes, the word over does denote jurisdiction. It also means something is complete, or that an alternate side is exposed.

    But none of those have anything to do with the improper usage I pointed out It is improperly used when referring to increments - that's the point.
