If you were to start hiring staff members to fill certain jobs (many of you already may have), what positions do you think should be filled. Examples: Sales, Marketing, Webmaster, etc. Also, which of those are the most important and you would hire your best man/woman for?
It would really depend on your company, and the situation that it's in.
I mean, if you are able to provide satisfactory customer support, there would be no point in hiring another tech support. If you are experiencing a low-volume of signups, then you may want to hire a marketer, and so on...
That is a good point. In this case, I would be refering to a growing company, who may be experiencing some growing pains such as lack of support, customer service, etc. You don't want to have to wake up in the morning to hundreds of emails, whether they be orders or support calls.
I dont know how big you may be, but for most people around here, i know it applies for my staff, if you cant handle multiple jobs, you're useless. I expect all admins to also be able to dub as tech support, maintain hardware, and handle some basic sales related stuff. I guess once you get bigger you can branch everything out a little more and have people dedicated to their area, but it's always good to have some people who do a little of everything as they're going to be more likely to spot inefficiencies, places where the company is falling behind, etc.
I think the kind of staff you hire depends on whether you own dedicated servers, colocate, or have your DC/NOC. You wouldn't need a hardware guy if you purchase dedicated servers . And if you had your own DC, you would need security and hardware technicians.
Well I think the second most important person to have on hand is the billing accounting person. Because you can make all the sales in the world have the best tech support going but if you can't keep the money you make you are sunk to start with.
