If you are new to the system and it is a live one, it would be best if you hire someone to have a check.

server security is not a simple subject. There's no way we can give you a simple solution.

Then you will NEVER be sure of it's security. There is no simple all encompassing template for server security. Every server is different and security issues are broad in nature and changing every day. If you want to be "sure of its security", then you will need to actually understand major security issues from tcp/ip, to kernel and web application architecture, to user and file security and more. Simply using 'typical settings' is useless in most cases.
Expert could (and do) write 1000's of forum posts about 'simple steps for security' and many people following those steps will still end up with a compromised machine. If you don't plan on doing the research required to secure your machine, then do yourself a favor and either get the machine secured by a professional or do the rest of the net a favor take it offline.
Even so, for "simple steps" (better than nothing, I guess), why not read the sub-forum Technical and Security Tutorials ?Last edited by SROHost; 09-01-2007 at 11:04 AM.
