uk2.net 10000gb special.... Makes me worry.

So they offer 10,000gb now. Lets talk theoretical here.

So lets assume I have a client doing 500TB (lets say this is also 2.5gbit at peak time) at lets say softlayer. Softlayer charges the client 10cents a gb, that comes out to 50,000.

Now the client sees that uk2 special, they are then like hey... I can get 50 servers, 500tb of transfer for a fraction of the price, roughly $11,939.5, because you can get a dual xeon for £119.

Makes me wonder about the financials of a company if they are offering something like this. A scenario like this could potentially be very bad. But hey, they offer it.. it has to be good right? We shall see.

They are playing game on bandwidth (overselling) as many others also doing this. When I try to ordering, at the bandwidth option, If I choose " 10 Mbit Unmetered and Unshared bandwidth 1 month - £10" ???
So I think they offer you 10TB, but you won't able to use all of it.

That is what I am thinking, I tried to find anything bw related in their TOS, but couldn't.

Hey Steven,

Check who their uplink providers and you will discover answer for that "super" promo - their uplink providers are Hurricane Electic ($5/mbps promo going on right now) and Cogent (can go for same $5/mbps on huge commitments) - here is no Tier 1 providers.

Looks like they buying cheap (crappy) resold traslit as well Over time this will working against them anyway, why worry ?

Of course you would NOT be able to use those 10TB a month - this is PROMO, not more then that.

Last monday here was fiber cut at Telia (major HE.net traslit) and Cogent - uk2.net was very slow...

HE is not that crappy though. Are these servers on their normal network? Cause then we could run some speed tests from their testfiles.

And, no..this cannot be done if everybody would use that 10TB. 39 pounds is about $80, a typical price for these servers with a 1000GB bandwidth limit. But I'm pretty sure not everybody will actually use it

lmfao...

Offers just get crazier and crazier.

The guys that think up these offers must be on hard drugs

Never mind the fact that they won't honour it ...who needs 10,000 gb of bw a month.

Con of the month offer I'd say.

The point I'm trying to make is, I could cause them a lot of heartache if I wanted to, because I could easily push a few clients there that would USE the bw.

Well, I can think of a few purposes for 10TB of traffic...

- Free image hosts
- Free file hosts
- Streaming video/audio sites
- You-tube clones
- Download mirrors for large (legal) download sites

The thing is, with an offer like this they WILL attract these kinds of customers, so if they're betting that nobody will use 10TB, I think they'll quickly find out they're wrong.

Now if they can keep this going... I might end up getting one server myself: a burstable 30Mbps average usage server for just $80 sounds great. But yeah, if you do the math, there is no way they can keep this up even if they can get bandwidth at bottom prices.

Our network is NOT oversold, maxed out or even 30% utilized at peak. Your server would be on a full dublex 100mbps network, on our gigabit infrastructure, and you are able to peak to that at anytime. In 2007 we are at 100% network uptime, and in 2006 we were at 99.997%
We do not have packetloss issues, high pingtimes etc etc.
Guys, we have been doing this since '98 and we have thousands of servers under management.

What made me go to market with this crazy offer?

- when buying bandwidth from our providers we have always bought full gig’s, and started with quite high commits to ensure low prices. Even though we have thousands of servers in our DC’s we are not using anything close to the CDR’s we are paying for - and we were honestly quite fed up with that. We were hoping that this campaign would bring back some of the money we are investing every month in our high performing network.

Can I really transfer 10000gb every month?

- yes, you can, and we would not try to stop you if you wanted to.
...I already paid for the bandwidth, so I really want you to use it

Will this go on forever?

- It might not, but we have plenty of bw to spare right now. We might take offer away, but would not downgrade anyone naturally.

Maybe you can invest some of that extra money in having someone proofread your press releases

Yeah, it sort of funny I must admit

I didn't write it, and being from Denmark I can't even see the errors/typos honestly.

Here is OLD SAYING "What's is not making any cents - usually is not true". So, guys make your judgements. He.net is nice provider, but it's pretty crappy outside of USA - same for Cogent.
