How do I test my VPS bandwidth?

How do I test to see if I am getting the bandwidth I am signed up for?

Right now I have a vps with futurehosting.biz IP: 75.126.49.194.

On their advertisements they say everyone will be on a 100mbit port.

However, I have never gotten speeds above 10mbit UNLESS I am downloading from another machine in the same datacenter:

dallas.futurehosting. biz/test100.zip*

When I try downloading from a machine outside the same building such as:
www .futurehosting.biz/test100.zip* (Their Chicago DC)

I never, ever get speeds over 10 mbit outside the same DC.

I opened up a ticket regarding this, and all they say over at future hosting is that Virtuozzo confirms it's a 100mbit link, and that other users in the node may be using the bandwidth at the same time.

The only explanation I can think of is that it truly is a 100mbit port, but is capped to 10mbit once it goes outside the datacenter. If this is the case, they should clearly state this in their advertisement. Or is this a common practice with VPS hosts?

I think it means the host node is on 100mbps?

hi all nodes are probably on 100mb but the 100mb port is shared between however many vps are on the node so cant see how ever they would be a way of you maxin port yourself as its a shared port on a vps (they dont install seprate nic for each vps)

That's what I thought, but why is it I get the full 100 mbit when I download inside the datacenter? That means the port is not loaded by other users to the point where I would be getting 1/10th the speed.

>>> t why is it I get the full 100 mbit wh

This means that you are not rate limited, if you were you would not be getting 100Mbit.

Regards to traffic outside this datacenter, what other locations have tried pulling files from to compare? 10Mbit over the internet is not bad at all for a single connection - try opening multiple connections to see if it still stays at 10Mbit, I suspect with each additional connection you create you will be able to get beyond 10Mbit.

Is there any reason why my situation would improve by opening multiple connections?

I am pretty sure they would not throttle their own test file
www .futurehosting.biz/test100.zip *
to support 10 mbit speeds only out of the same DC, and that's not the only test file I have tried.

htt p://209.51.128.180/speedtest/11mbtest *
htt p://datacenter.misdivision.com/resources/download.test/index.zip *
htt p://www .jaguarpc.com/test.bin*

All of these I get speeds of 10mbit or below, while inner DC connections still yield near 100mbit speeds.

Ok thanks Eurovps, it seems like each connection is capped to 10 mbit, but I can have multiple connections.

Is there any reason for this? Can I change this? Why wasn't this mentioned in their advertisement? Is this a usual VPS host practice?

The reason I ask is because it is annoying connecting to the same repositories and sites that I usually get more than 10mbit out of on my personal connections.

Try to download a test file near to the city in which the company has its servers in. For example, if they are in Toronto, download a file from the Toronto area. If you're getting faster than 10Mpbs, then you're obviously not rate limited!

Better yet, have you asked the company?

Yes VP-Kaumil, they said I am on 100 mbit. As I said in my last post, it seems that I can reach higher than this 10 mbit barrier by using multiple connections.

This is annoying though. Is there a way to get 100mbit out of 1 connection?

Due to the latency of the internet and other factors, usually a connection reaching 10mbit is impressive without any download accelerators which open multiple connections.

My guess is they are referring to the connection from the server to the switch being 100.
